China Eastern flight 5735: Second black box reported to be found

China Eastern 737-800

After a first announcement that was denied on Friday March 25, Chinese media is reporting that the Flight Data Recorder (FDR), the second data device that can cast a light on the possible causes of the accident that cost 132 lives, has been found in the morning of today, March 27.

According to Xinhua News Agency, one of its reporters received information from the investigators that the FDR was found. More information is expected to be delivered in a press conference.

Just hours ago, China Eastern operated a charter flight (CA85) from Beijing to Washington Dulles that is expected to transport US officials -from both FAA and NTSB- to the crash site. A second flight is said to be scheduled to get to Seattle to pick up Boeing technical advisors, but no operation has started yet.

The FDR will be able to provide technical information about the aircraft and crew inputs, should the device continue to work after a high energy impact like the one presumed in this case.

Initial reports on the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) indicate that the first black box found is severely damaged and will require a significant and complex amount of work for investigators to extract data.

This is a developing story.
