Continuing the plans announced last week for a gradual increase in the number of routes and flights to be served from the new Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) to decompress operations at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), Aeromexico has set a start date for five new routes from the facilities located at the Santa Lucia Air Base.
Starting August 15, the airline will begin flying from AIFA to Acapulco, Cancun, and Oaxaca with seven weekly flights, and to Guadalajara and Monterrey with fourteen weekly flights.
In the second half of September it will be the turn of Veracruz, although frequencies were not disclosed.
These services will be complemented with those already operating from there to Merida (seven weekly flights), Puerto Vallarta (from four to seven weekly flights) and Villahermosa (from three to seven).
In August, Aeromexico will increase its monthly seat offer to 50,000, a 400% increase over the current offer. In September, with the inclusion of Veracruz and the increase in frequencies on three of the routes, the company expects to have 900 monthly operations with an offer of more than 100,000 seats.
At the beginning of the month, Aeromexico had already advanced its plans to reach 30 daily flights at AIFA by the end of October after a meeting between industry representatives and Mexican aviation authorities to define actions to mitigate the saturation of Mexico City International Airport (AICM), which was in the news after the incident between two Volaris A320s that could have resulted in a tragedy. This will not affect the summer season peak schedule.
Viva Aerobus also announced last week an expansion plan at AIFA incorporating four domestic and one international destination.
