Last Saturday, June 4th, Delta Air Lines opened its new Terminal C facilities at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in Queens, New York. The company highlighted its four billion dollars investment to transform and modernize one of its major hubs.
The previous Wednesday, the airline’s CEO, Ed Bastian, along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul and officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, participated in a ceremony to unveil the new passenger acceptance, security screening, baggage claim and lounge facilities.
«Today truly marks a new beginning for Delta customers and employees at our LaGuardia hub with the opening of this extraordinary new terminal», Bastian said. «It is because of Delta’s 10.000 people based here that we have been able to invest nearly 7 billion dollars in New York’s airports since 2010», he added.
Modernization work accelerated during the pandemic. According to the airline, it expects to complete all works in 2024, two years earlier than originally planned. The project envisages the consolidation of terminals C and D into a single 1.3 million square meter area. The unified terminal will feature 37 new gates.
«Delta continues to redouble its vision for the future of travel, building airports of the future that are convenient, easy to navigate and part of an effortlessly connected journey, capable of absorbing and supporting innovative new experiences as technology evolves», the company said.
The new facilities now available feature 36 traditional check-in counters and 49 self-service counters. In addition, eleven security checkpoints were inaugurated to streamline processes.
On the other hand, Delta highlighted the visual design of the spaces. In that regard, it celebrated the installation of a digital art space consisting of 34 lenticular panels, which can be appreciated above the security checkpoint.
The now-opened Concourse E is the second of four new concourses to open. It features ten boarding gates. The space features a revamped food court: Bubby’s Diner, Chuko Ramen, Essex Burger, Poppy’s Bagel and Starbucks have a presence in the area.
Delta Sky Club
Once fully completed, LaGuardia Airport will be home to the largest Delta Sky Club in the airline’s network. The lounge will have architectural aspects evocative of early 20th century New York and will be decorated with selected artwork reflecting the Big Apple’s relevance on the international art scene. It will be able to host up to nearly 600 people at a time.
