Runway excursion of a Korean Air Airbus A330 in the Philippines: What we know

A Korean Airlines Airbus A330-300, registration HL7525, flying flight KE-631 from Seoul, South Korea, to Cebu City, Philippines, had circled twice at low altitude attempting to approach runway 22 at Mactan-Cebu Airport, climbed back to 5,000 feet, began a new holding pattern, and landed on runway 22 at 23:07L (15:07Z) about 55 minutes after the first attempt and approximately 42 minutes after the second.

The aircraft crossed the end of the runway at about eighty knots over the ground and came to rest about 360 meters/1200 feet past the end of the runway near the airport perimeter fence.

According to Korean Air, no injuries were reported and all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, but the aircraft, which passed through the localizer antenna, suffered considerable damage, including collapse of the landing gear, damage to the underside of the nose and loss of structural integrity in the cabin.

Weather information from the destination airport at the time of landing indicated that conditions were not optimal, with rain and low visibility.

This is a developing story.
