Aeromexico will fly to Italy and expand operations in Spain

Aeromexico will add a fifth destination in Europe by announcing a route to Rome/Fiumicino (FCO), Italy, beginning March 25, 2023. In addition, it will increase its flights from Guadalajara (GDL) and Monterrey (MTY) to Madrid (MAD), Spain by the summer of 2023.

The company would return to Italy after 15 years of absence, when it operated between July 2008 and June 2009 with twice weekly flights on Boeing 767-200ER, with a stopover in Monterrey.

In response to the growing number of leisure travelers, it will return to Italy with three flights per week, increasing to five per week starting in June. The operations will be served by Boeing 787-8 aircraft with a capacity of 243 passengers, providing 2,430 seats each week for the northern summer.

Aeromexico also announced that is negotiating a codeshare agreement with ITA Airways allowing connections to Milan, Turin, Genoa, Venice, Florence, Naples, Catania, and Bologna.

Flight Itinerary

  • Mexico City (MEX) – Rome/Fiumicino (FCO) Flight AM 70 MEX 19:15 – FCO 15:15 (+1) Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Tuesdays and Fridays will be added as of June.
  • Rome/Fiumicino (FCO) – Mexico City (MEX) Flight AM 71 FCO 22:00 – MCO 04:40 (+1) Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. Wednesdays and Saturdays will be added from June.

In 2019, Italy was the seventh most important European market in Mexico, according to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), moving 150,500 passengers with operations by Alitalia, NEOS and Blue Panorama Airlines. During 2022 (January-September), NEOS was the only operator between Italy and Mexico and moved 18,755 passengers.

New frequencies to Spain

Aeromexico continues to invest in Monterrey (MTY) and Guadalajara (GDL) to Spain by increasing each route to one daily flight starting in June 2023.

The company began operations in December 2021, since then it has moved 46,866 passengers from Monterrey and 49,969 travelers from Guadalajara, according to AENA Estadísticas.

With this increase, Aeromexico will have four daily flights between Mexico and Spain, given that two other services depart from Mexico City (MEX).

In addition to Spain and Italy, the company has:

  • Paris/Charles de Gaulle (CDG), France; nine weekly flights with Boeing 787-9s.
  • Amsterdam (AMS), Netherlands; one daily Boeing 787-8 flight.
  • London/Heathrow (LHR), United Kingdom; with one daily Boeing 787-8 flight.

Representing a total of 54 weekly flights to the old continent. For the moment, Barcelona (BCN), Spain, is the only European destination that the company has not resumed.
