Viva Aerobus expands its international operations with a new route between Quito (UIO) and Cancun (CUN) starting June 16, 2023, in what will be the first time the airline will fly to Ecuador. Viva Aerobus currently offers non-stop service to Bogota, Colombia (BOG) from four Mexican cities and will soon offer flights in two South American nations.
The announcement of this route was held at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) together with authorities from the Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador, Quito Turismo, the State Government of Quintana Roo and Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR). This service seeks to offer Ecuadorian travelers a more comfortable option to fly to the Mexican Caribbean at affordable prices.
«All of us in Quintana Roo are very excited to welcome many more Ecuadorian visitors so they can discover our endless natural, cultural, historical, gastronomic and recreational offerings,» said Mara Lezama Espinoza, Governor of Quintana Roo.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), 56,849 passengers were mobilized with an occupancy factor of 67% in 2022 between Mexico and Ecuador, for the moment the only airline operating in this market is Aeromexico, Viva Aerobus will be the only low-cost operator in this segment.
Currently, Cancun International Airport (CUN) is connected to the South American cities of Bogota (BOG), Caracas (CCS), Medellin (MDE), Cali (CLO), Lima (LIM), Buenos Aires – Ezeiza (EZE) and Santiago (SCL). Ecuador’s last air connection with the main city of Quintana Roo was on March 22, 2020, with a service of the extinct interjet between Guayaquil (GYE) and Cancun (CUN).

According to latest information from the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico, Ecuador is among the twenty-five nations that generate the highest flow of air travelers to the Aztec country. On the other hand, according to reports from the Municipality of Quito, Mexico ranked sixth among countries that sent more tourists to Ecuador. In addition, Viva Aerobus with its new route will offer convenient connections to 18 Mexican cities.
Flight schedule between Cancun and Quito
- Cancun – Quito Flight VB 456 CUN 21:00 – UIO 01:00+1 Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Quito – Cancun Flight VB 457 UIO 02:00 – CUN 06:00 Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The route will be operated on Airbus A320 Family aircraft and promotional fares are available from USD 89 plus taxes one way.
