With more than two decades of presence in Peru, Delta Air Lines is celebrating its 25th anniversary flying between Atlanta and Lima. Since the company’s arrival in 1998, it has operated without interruption, except during part of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline has facilitated the movement of 3.2 million passengers on the Atlanta-Lima route, demonstrating its commitment to connectivity and to the region’s airline industry.
Over time, industry trends have changed significantly. For example, motivated by Japanese migration to Peru and its relationship with Peruvian society, Delta scheduled an overnight Lima – Atlanta flight, seeking to facilitate the connection from Atlanta to more than 100,000 Japanese and their descendants at Narita International Airport (NRT) in Tokyo, an action that strengthened significant ties with entities and authorities of the Japanese community in Peru.
Currently, Delta’s strategy focuses primarily on the U.S. and Canada, connecting travelers from Peru to more than 300 of the airline’s domestic destinations in the U.S., benefiting customers with access to multiple travel opportunities.
Delta was a key player during the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline together with the U.S. Embassy in Lima managed 28 repatriation charter flights from June through October 2020, moving 7,086 passengers from the U.S. to Peru. Most of the services were performed in Airbus A350-900 aircraft and others in Airbus A330-300. In addition, oxygen cylinders were transported to support the Peruvian government during the health crisis.
Delta in Peru has also performed charitable acts including the collaboration of the sales, ticket office and customer service teams with the Ann Sullivan Center in 2019, organizing simulated flights to Orlando for 400 children with different abilities, including those with autism, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy and developmental delay. In addition, support for the Sagrada Familia shelter, where vulnerable children are cared for.
Peru, more connected to the world
In February of this year, Delta reached a milestone in its operational presence in Lima, reaching its maximum historical capacity in Peru by increasing seat capacity by 57% annually, an operation that is being carried out on Airbus A350-900 aircraft with a capacity of 339 seats.
In October 2022, Delta Air Lines and LATAM Airlines implemented their Joint Venture, both companies have increased capacity between the United States and South America by 75%, driving the expansion of existing routes and the addition of new ones. By October 29, LATAM will begin a non-stop flight between Atlanta and Lima with three weekly flights operated on Boeing 767-300ERs.
