Load Factor Report: Aerolíneas Argentinas’ Best and Worst Performing Domestic Routes

Aerolíneas Argentinas presented last week its flight schedule for the 2023/2024 summer season, as well as other news for the coming year, in which an increase of 9% in the number of seats offered during peak season, and 12% overall for the entire year 2024 is observed.

There, they also shared interesting data about the performance of all their domestic routes during October, a month in which Aerolíneas Argentinas averaged a load factor of 87%, moving 984 thousand passengers.

In this article, we compile all those routes and the competition each face, considering the schedule obtained through Cirium for October 2023.

The 10 domestic routes with the best load factor

1- Puerto Iguazú – Salta: surprisingly, although upon second thought maybe not so much, the domestic route of Aerolíneas Argentinas with the best load factor in October was Iguazú – Salta, with an average of 97%, transporting 3,355 passengers on the four weekly flights operated with Embraer E190 aircraft.

2- Buenos Aires – Puerto Iguazú: this is one of the most competitive routes in the Argentine domestic market, with an average load factor of 94% and 62,748 passengers. Aerolíneas Argentinas operates 40 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 10 from Ezeiza. It competes with Flybondi (18 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 14 from Ezeiza) and Jetsmart (14 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 6 from Ezeiza).

3- Buenos Aires – Salta: the north continues to stand strong, with this route achieving an average load factor of 94% with 43,456 passengers transported during October. Aerolíneas Argentinas operates 35 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 5 from Ezeiza. Competes with Flybondi (14 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 6 from Ezeiza) and with Jetsmart (6 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 6 from Ezeiza).

4- Buenos Aires – Neuquén: the first route with a more corporate than touristic profile appears. Aerolíneas Argentinas recorded an average load factor of 94% between Buenos Aires and Neuquén in October, transporting 39,215 passengers with a frequency of 30 weekly flights from Aeroparque and two from Ezeiza. Flybondi and Jetsmart operate 14 and 10 weekly flights respectively from Aeroparque.

5- Buenos Aires – Bahía Blanca: also with an average load factor of 94%, this route moved 17,281 passengers during October, being the only operator with 20 weekly flights.

6- Buenos Aires – Córdoba: on this key route between the two most populated cities of Argentina, Aerolíneas averaged a load factor of 93%, moving 61,553 passengers with a frequency of 40 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 15 from Ezeiza. Flybondi operates 23 weekly flights from Aeroparque and JetSMART 17 from Aeroparque and one from Ezeiza.

7- Córdoba – Neuquén: this is the second interprovincial route appearing in the ranking, in which Aerolíneas Argentinas achieved an average load factor of 93% with 7,262 passengers transported, operating six weekly flights with Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 737-700 aircraft. Flybondi competes with two weekly flights on 737-800.

8- Buenos Aires – Mendoza: Aerolíneas Argentinas transported 62,852 passengers between these two cities achieving an average load factor of 92%. The company operates 49 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 13 from Ezeiza, competing with Flybondi (34 weekly flights from Aeroparque and one from Ezeiza) and Jetsmart (21 weekly flights from Aeroparque).

9- Buenos Aires – Río Gallegos: Aerolíneas Argentinas averaged a load factor of 92%, transporting 17,921 passengers. It is the only operator with 14 weekly flights.

10- Buenos Aires – Tucumán: another route from the Argentine north where Aerolíneas averaged a load factor of 91% with 37,284 passengers transported in October. Its schedule consists of 31 weekly flights from Aeroparque and 4 from Ezeiza, competing with 13 weekly flights from Flybondi and 9 weekly flights from Jetsmart from Aeroparque, plus another weekly flight from the latter from Ezeiza.

Aerolíneas Argentinas domestic routes with the lowest load factor

Only one of the ten routes with the worst load factor during October has Buenos Aires as one of its points: the one connecting the Argentine capital with Termas de Río Hondo, in Santiago del Estero, where it averaged 69% with 761 passengers. Aerolíneas Argentinas offers two weekly flights between these cities.

Apart from this data, the ten routes with the lowest load factor were:

1- Reconquista – Rosario: 51% with 888 passengers transported (two weekly flights with E190).

2- Córdoba – San Juan: 65% with 998 passengers (two weekly flights with E190).

3- Comodoro Rivadavia – Río Gallegos: 66% with 1,576 passengers (three weekly flights with E190).

4- Comodoro Rivadavia – Trelew: 66% with 1,771 passengers (three weekly flights with E190).

5- Iguazú – Tucumán: 68% with 1,169 passengers (two weekly flights with E190).

6- Buenos Aires – Río Hondo: 69% with 761 passengers (two weekly flights with 737-800/737-700).

7- Bariloche – Viedma: 69% with 1,257 passengers (two weekly flights with E190).

8- Catamarca – La Rioja: 70% with 1,589 passengers (three weekly flights with E190).

9- Trelew – Ushuaia: 71% with 3,020 passengers (three weekly flights with 737-800).

10- Bariloche – Mendoza: 71% with 3,129 passengers (three weekly flights with E190).

On all these routes Aerolíneas Argentinas is the sole operator, except on Bariloche – Mendoza where it competes with Jetsmart (three weekly flights with A320).
