Air Century has requested the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to commence operations as of December 3, 2021, flying from Santo Domingo/Las Americas (SDQ) and Santiago de los Caballeros (STI) to New York (JFK).
The plan submitted by the Dominican airline involves operating Airbus A321 aircraft with a capacity of 220 passengers with a limit of up to five flights per week.
The operations will be conducted by Sky Cana while Air Century will market its flights through its website; this is the same agreement under which the airline operates flights to Miami (MIA) and Havana (HAV).
Sky Cana also has several partnerships with travel agencies, including with Go Fly The World for regular operations in Valencia (VLN) and Caracas (CCS), Venezuela.
The company owns two Airbus A321-200s registered as 9H-AMD «Go Puerto Plata» and 9H-AME «Go Samaná»; and is planning to add an Airbus A330 in the future.
Competition between New York and the Dominican Republic
The states of New Jersey and New York account for 7.8% of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and are home to the largest community of Dominicans in the United States.
For decades, U.S. airlines have maintained high connectivity between Newark and New York with the Caribbean country, a market that also attracts Dominican airlines.
According to data obtained by the DOT, in 2019, the airline transported 1,012,007 passengers to New York and 246,579 to Newark from Santiago de los Caballeros. On the other hand, from Santo Domingo/Las Americas it carried 959,951 travelers to the Big Apple and 429,160 to New Jersey.
