Conviasa to operate flights between Buenos Aires and Caracas

After a four-year absence, Conviasa will resume its flights between Buenos Aires/Ezeiza (EZE), Argentina, and Caracas (CCS), Venezuela, as from December 20, thereby occupying the space left by Estelar, which abandoned the route when the pandemic broke out.

The Venezuelan state airline will have a weekly service operated by an Airbus A340-300 with a capacity for 255 passengers, which will mark the return of the Airbus four-engine aircraft to Argentina, following the withdrawal of the model by Estelar, Edelweiss, Iberia and Aerolíneas Argentinas, which were the only operators of the aircraft in Buenos Aires. The flights will be targeted to ethnic and V.F.R. (Visiting Friends & Relatives) traffic, to serve the large Venezuelan community in Argentina.

Recently, two humanitarian flights had taken place between the two capitals, the first flight carried 32 passengers from Caracas and departed from Argentina with 187 Venezuelans. Both flights were part of the Venezuelan government’s program «Vuelta a la Patria» (Return to the Homeland), which they were carrying out to bring back their nationals who emigrated to different Latin American countries.

The flights will be of a special «regular» nature, since the Venezuelan government maintains restricted international operations, except for flights to Bolivia, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic, Russia, and Turkey. The same initiative is also used in the flights recently launched by Conviasa to Quito (UIO) and Guayaquil (GYE) in Ecuador; Lima (LIM) in Peru and Santiago (SCL) in Chile; and the services to Madrid (MAD) in Spain which are operated by Conviasa as well as by Air Europa, Iberia, and Plus Ultra.

Conviasa operated in Argentina until May 2017, when it had two weekly flights connecting Buenos Aires and Porlamar (PMV) in the summer season and an additional flight also from Caracas. Routes were served in a Boeing 747-400 leased from Spain’s Wamos Air.

At the end of 2017, Estelar managed to replace Conviasa on the link between Buenos Aires and Caracas with two weekly flights on Airbus A340-300s. In 2019 it transported 35,858 passengers with an average load factor of 70%.
