Updated on:

Munich (MUC) is one of Europe’s leading airports and Lufthansa’s five-star hub. Throughout the course of the pandemic, its operations were affected by severe sanitary regulations and border closures, which mainly affected intercontinental operations.

As travel restrictions were eased Munich Airport (MUC) gradually regained long-haul operations. During the 2021 summer season, the airport recorded 67 weekly flights to North America. Transatlantic travel has been picking up quickly thanks to the opening of borders of countries such as the United States and Canada.

«Bookings numbers from airlines already show that passenger demand is up. When we look back on the pandemic and the impact it had on global aviation in the subsequent years, we may well remember November 8, 2021, as a key turning point» said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport.

On December 1, the satellite building at Munich Terminal 2 (MUC) reopened on a partial basis and was once again deployed to serve a large proportion of flights to the United States. Lufthansa has been consistently increasing its capacity in the transatlantic market, the airline is offering more than 60 flights a week on 12 destinations to North America. Cities such as Newark and Chicago are experiencing bookings above 2019 levels; others with higher demand include Boston, New York, and Los Angeles, plus for the first time year-round service to Vancouver is being maintained.

In December, U.S. airlines have reactivated a large part of their operations. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have recommenced services from Charlotte and Atlanta respectively to the Bavarian capital. United currently operates 28 flights per week from four destinations, Air Canada increased its flights to 4 per week. During the winter season, the leisure airline Condor will offer flights to Punta Cana with two weekly frequencies.

For the summer season of 2022, the main airport of the Bavarian capital will have new transatlantic destinations and increased frequencies from several operators.

Lufthansa will bring back service to Rio de Janeiro and San Diego, California. The German airline will resume Airbus A340-600 operations and increase the Airbus A350 fleet from 17 to 21 aircraft.

Eurowings Discover announced its landing with long-haul flights to three transatlantic destinations: Las Vegas, Punta Cana, and Cancun.
