Eurowings took delivery of its first Airbus A320neo, the Lufthansa Group’s first NEO with CFM-Leap engines. The aircraft arrived in Düsseldorf (DUS), Germany, on April 1st and is registered as D-AENA.
The regional low cost carrier plans to take delivery of thirteen new-generation Airbus A320 Family aircraft, including eight A320neo with a capacity of 180 passengers and five A321neo with a 232-seat configuration.
Eurowings will start operating the first A320neo aircraft in June 2022, while the A321neo aircraft will arrive in 2023 and will be used mainly to high-demand destinations, such as Palma de Mallorca (PMI) in Spain.
Eurowings will be the first airline within the Lufthansa Group to operate aircraft powered by CFM-LEAP-1A engines. Lufthansa and Swiss use the Pratt & Whitney (GTF) 1100G powerplant.
For this northern summer season, one of the highest passenger flows since the outbreak of the health crisis is expected. The company had to drastically increase its fleet to meet the growing demand.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Ch-Aviation, Eurowings signed a wet lease contract for five A220-300s with airBaltic, eleven Airbus A320ceo with Avion Express Malta and two Boeing 737-800s with TUIfly.
Its own fleet consists of 37 Airbus A319ceo, 55 Airbus A320ceo and two Airbus A321ceo.
Data obtained through Cirium show that in July Düsseldorf (DUS), Stuttgart (STR), Munich (MUC) and Hamburg (HAM) will account for 28.4%, 19%, 16.5% and 15.9% of the airline’s flights respectively.
Spain will account for 25% of the airline’s routes, with Palma de Mallorca being the main destination with 25.6% of the flights offered connecting to:

- Linz (LNZ), Salzburg (SZG) and Graz (GRZ), Austria.
- Prague (PRG), Czech Republic.
- Zurich (ZRH), Switzerland.
- Stockholm/Arlanda (ARN), Sweden.
