The sub-delegate of the Spanish government in Galicia, María Rivas, visited the renovation works at Alvedro Airport (LCG), which serves the city of A Coruña. Works began last March and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2023.

The official was accompanied by the airport Director, Jesús Campo, and the Director of the Development Area, Ana Quintairos. During the tour, the authorities highlighted the investment of 10.99 million euros to improve the facilities.

The works include the regeneration of the runway pavement, the replacement of the entire airport beaconing system, the creation of an intermediate apron to allow aircraft to turn (thus shortening runway runs and reducing fuel consumption) and the leveling of the runway axis. According to Rivas, this is «an action that will make Alvedro a more efficient and sustainable airport».

The work is being carried out mainly during the night. However, Aena indicated that the deepest regeneration of the asphalt will have to be carried out in two sections and will force the air station to be closed for continuous periods of 80 hours. According to the information provided, the airport will interrupt all its activities for four consecutive weekends. The first of the closures will begin at the end of Friday, June 10th.

The 2022 General State Budget allocates more than 21 million euros to Galicia’s airport system. Of that sum, 9.4 million are earmarked for modernization works in the A Coruña’s airport. Additionally, last September the government approved the Investment Plan for Galicia, which will be implemented between 2022 and 2026. The initiative aims to develop the autonomous community’s infrastructure.

«The creation and improvement of infrastructure plays a fundamental role in the development of the territories», Rivas stressed.

On the other hand, the national administration is also working on the Alvedro Airport Master Plan. The project foresees the expansion of its capacity to exceed 1.5 million passengers a year. In addition, it plans to reach twenty thousand operations per year and to have a terminal able to to handle up to ten operations every hour, compared to the current six.
