Emirates and United Airlines have signed a landmark codeshare agreement that will mark the American carrier’s return to Dubai after seven years.

Beginning March 25, 2023, United will link Newark (EWR) with Dubai (DBX), from where passengers will be able to connect with Emirates flights or its low-cost Flydubai to more than one hundred cities including destinations in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

In addition, from November, Emirates passengers flying to Chicago, San Francisco and Houston will be able to connect to more than 200 destinations across United’s U.S. network.

At the other airports where Emirates offers non-stop service (Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Orlando, Seattle and Washington DC), the two airlines will have an interline agreement.

United and Emirates celebrated the announcement of their partnership at an event Dulles International Airport (IAD) hosted by United CEO Scott Kirby and Emirates President Tim Clark featuring Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and crew members from each airline.

«This agreement brings together two iconic flag carriers that share a common commitment to creating the best customer experience in the skies,» said United CEO Scott Kirby.

«United’s new flight to Dubai and our complementary networks will facilitate global travel for millions of our customers, helping to boost local economies and strengthen cultural ties. This is a proud moment for both United and Emirates employees, and I look forward to our journey together,» Kirby added.

«Two of the world’s largest and best-known airlines are coming together to better take people to more places, at a time when demand for travel is recovering strongly. This is an important partnership that will generate huge consumer benefits and bring the United Arab Emirates and the United States even closer together,» said Sir Tim Clark , chairman of Emirates Airline.

Customers of both airlines will soon be able to book these connecting flights with a single ticket, which will make check-in and baggage transfers faster and easier. For example, travelers can visit United.com or use the United app to book a flight from Newark/New York to Karachi, Pakistan, or visit Emirates.com to book a flight from Dubai to Atlanta or Honolulu.

The agreement will also give members of both airlines’ frequent flyer programs more opportunities to earn more rewards: United MileagePlus users on flights from Newark/New York to Dubai will soon be able to earn and redeem additional connecting miles on Emirates and flydubai flights, and Emirates Skywards members will be able to earn miles on United-operated flights. Eligible United passengers will soon be able to access Emirates lounges when connecting to and from the airline’s new flight to Dubai.
