United to operate flights between San Francisco and Rome

As part of its continued transatlantic expansion, United will connect San Francisco to Italy with an unprecedented service to Rome – Fiumicino (FCO). By the 2023 summer season, the carrier will offer up to five daily flights between the United States and the Italian capital from its main hubs on the East and West coasts.

The Chicago-based airline will be responsible for resuming nonstop services between the San Francisco Bay Area with Italy from summer 2019. The last operators in this market were Air Italy and Norwegian Long Haul.

Currently the only carrier offering nonstop operations between the U.S. West Coast and Italy is ITA Airways with a route between Rome (FCO) and Los Angeles (LAX).

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, United for the upcoming summer season will have an offer of 39,410 weekly seats between San Francisco (SFO) and Europe via the following destinations: London Heathrow (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Zurich (ZRH), Paris (CDG), Zurich (ZRH) and Rome (FCO). The airline will increase its capacity between SFO and the Old Continent by 6.4% by 2023.

Flight Itinerary

  • San Francisco – Rome Flight UA 507 SFO 16:20 – FCO 13:10+1 daily flights.
  • Rome – San Francisco Flight UA 506 FCO 15:10 – SFO 18:50 daily flights.

The route will be operated on Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with a capacity of 276 seats in four classes (50 Polaris Business Class/24 Premium Plus/46 Economy Plus/156 Economy) and promotional fares start at USD 1,507 round trip. This service will be seasonal during the summer season and will be available from May 27, 2023 through September 27, 2023.

United continues to strengthen the market between the United States and Italy, for next summer it will have an offer of 31,976 weekly seats, this represents an increase of 9.2% over 2022 levels. The Chicago-based airline will be the North American carrier serving more Italian destinations than any other carrier.
