Stratolaunch has received authorization to acquire Virgin Orbit’s modified Boeing 747. This marks a notable expansion of Stratolaunch’s air-launch fleet.
After the acquisition, the aircraft will be transformed into a launch platform for Stratolaunch Talon-A reusable hypersonic testbeds. The revamped 747 is projected to become fully operational by 2024, enhancing Stratolaunch’s in-flight test capacity.
Dr. Zachary Krevor, CEO of Stratolaunch, hailed the acquisition as a «transformational milestone». He affirmed, «We will be able to increase both our flight test capacity and reach to become an even stronger partner to global customers.»
Stratolaunch’s Hypersonic Testing Milestone
Following a successful Talon-A vehicle separation test, Stratolaunch is gearing up for its first hypersonic flight of the TA-1 expendable testbed, slated for late summer 2023. «The need for hypersonic testing has never been greater,» Dr. Krevor said.
Upon finalization of the acquisition, the aircraft will undergo modifications for its new hypersonic test mission. Additionally, the launch platform will be renamed, marking a new chapter for Stratolaunch.
