Major Fleet Expansion for Lufthansa Group: 80 New Aircraft to Join Between 2026 and 2032

The  Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Group approved the purchase of 80 new narrow-body aircraft valued at USD 9 billion at list prices.

On one hand, the order consists of 40 Airbus A220-300 (plus 20 on order) which will be destined for its brand new subsidiary Lufthansa City for short-haul flights from its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The aircraft will have a capacity for 148 passengers and will be delivered between 2026 and 2031.

Lufthansa Group is also proceeding with the purchase of 40 Boeing 737 MAX 8 (and 60 on order) which will have a configuration of 190 seats in two classes (Business and Economy), with deliveries extending between 2027 and 2032. The group has not yet defined which of its airlines these aircraft will be allocated to.

Lastly, Lufthansa Group has also secured options for 40 aircraft from the A320 family, which may eventually be added to the 71 A320neo and A321neo they will receive in the coming years.

“With today’s aircraft order, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our company’s history. This increases our order list of around 200 aircraft to 280 – plus an additional 120 purchasing options for further state-of-the-art short- and medium-haul aircraft. We are pleased that both Airbus and Boeing were able to convince us on all commercial and technological aspects,” said Detlef Kayser, member of the Executive Board, Fleet and Technology.

“In addition to this, the decision for the Boeing 737-8 MAX will also give us more flexibility for the procurement of short- and medium-haul aircraft in the future. The new ultra-modern aircraft offer our guests additional comfort. They are also quieter, more economical, more efficient, and emit up to 30 percent less CO2 than their predecessor models. The order demonstrates our airlines’ future viability and ability to invest, and it shows that we are living up to our responsibility to reduce our carbon emissions,” he added.
