While quad-engine jets have already passed their peak of glory in air transport, with fewer and fewer passenger airlines keeping them in their regular schedules, they still have quite a future in the cargo market.
The queen of them continues to be the 747, with around 400 aircraft still in operation across some 50 airlines, most of them specialized in cargo. One of the largest, with 30 in its fleet, is Cargolux.

To serve the current operation, which connects 90 cities around the world, Cargolux has launched a call for pilots for Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 747-8 aircraft, which is open until March 15, 2024.

The selection, they mention at Cargolux, will be organized according to future recruitment needs and is expected to start in the first quarter of 2024, with contracts, on a temporary basis, extending for 15 months (with the possibility of renewing them or converting them into permanent ones).
These are the exclusive requirements for the position:

- Type Rated B747 or Non-Type Rated
- EASA Part FCL ATPL or CPL/IR with ATPL theory (Frozen ATPL)
- EASA Part Med Class 1 Medical
- Minimum 1500 hours total flying time including:
- A minimum of 1500 hours on multi-pilot turbo-jet aeroplane certificated to the standards of CS-25/FAR-25 or equivalent or a minimum of 1500 hours on a multi-pilot turbo-prop aeroplane having a maximum certificated take-off mass of not less than 10000 kg or a certificated passenger seating configuration of more than 19 passengers
- Above average flying abilities & impeccable safety standards
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment
- Full second level graduation minimum (e.g. Baccalauréat, Abitur, A-Level Exam, Matura)
- Authorization to live and work within the European Union
- Minimum ICAO English language proficiency level 4, preferably level 6
- Ability to pass successfully a security background check and a pre-employment medical test
- Unrestricted rights for international travel
- Agreement to transfer your license to a Luxembourg issued EASA license
Among the general benefits observed on the Cargolux website are starting salaries of 7,175 euros per month for a senior first officer, 6,601 euros for first officers, and 6,090 euros for junior first officers. Additionally, 42 days of vacation, and a global medical plan are offered, among others.
