Volaris Maintains Leadership in Mexico

Mexican aviation´s current situation changed a lot due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aeroméxico, who was the usual main Mexican carrier, ceased to be due to being immersed in Chapter 11 financial restructuring process. This forced the airline to reduce its operations, return aircraft, etc.

The worst luck was Interjet’s, which stopped operating completely; however, it has recently announced its return and would operate from the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport.

These events marked a change in terms of leadership in Mexican airlines, with the new protagonists are now the ultra-low-cost carriers.

The Mexican ultra-low-cost airline Volaris ended 2021 as the main carrier in Mexico by transporting the largest number of passengers, and very close to it were Aeroméxico and Viva Aerobus.

Volaris 2022

This year things have started just as they ended last year, with Volaris leading with 2.3 million passengers carried in January. Then followed by Viva Aerobus with 1.45 million, and finally Aeroméxico with 1.27 million.

Considering the figures reported by Volaris in January and the current capacity for sale for February and March, the new leading Mexican airline is expected to grow around 50% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

For its part, Viva Aerobus reported having transported more than 1.22 million passengers, an increase of 89.4% compared to February 2021.

Viva Aerobus grew its capacity by 55.2% in the domestic market and by 455.7% in the international market.

For its part, Aeroméxico increased in January 2022 the percentage of passengers transported by 16.2% compared to January 2021.

In the international market, passengers transported increased 79.2% compared to January 2021. Meanwhile in the domestic market, passengers transported decreased 1.5% compared to the same period in 2021.

Despite the infections caused by the Ómicron variant, Mexican airlines have continued to operate and bet on growth.

Likewise, these 3 main Mexican airlines will be operating from the new Felipe Ángeles International Airport, whose airport fees are cheaper than those of the Benito Juárez International Airport.

These rates will be 245.30 pesos for domestic flights and 465.77 in the case of international flights, which is 60.3% cheaper to fly to destinations within the country and 62.4% for flights abroad.

With this, it is expected that the competition between these airlines operating from this new airport built for Mexico City will offer better rates for passengers and thus continue the Mexican airline industry growth.
