KLM brings back seasonal service to Cancun

KLM will bring back the seasonal service between Amsterdam (AMS) and Cancun (CUN), which will be available from October 18 to March 25, 2023 with three weekly flights initially and then in November increases to 4 times per week. In this way, the Dutch airline will once again offer two destinations in the Aztec country, complementing the route to Mexico City (MEX).

KLM entered the Mexican Caribbean market last winter as part of its restructuring of the intercontinental network due to the closing of borders of some countries, to meet the supply of sun and beach destinations, the company explored Cancun (CUN), a city also served by its sister airline Air France, between the two companies will have an offer of 9,552 seats per week in the state of Quintan Roo in 22 operations.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), 85,057 passengers and 559.5 tons of cargo were mobilized in the period from November 2021 to July 2022 between Amsterdam (AMS) and Cancun (CUN) in 310 operations. KLM will compete with leisure operator TUIfly Netherlands.

Flight Itinerary

  • Amsterdam – Cancun Flight KL 689 AMS 12:40 – CUN 16:20 Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  • Cancun – Amsterdam Flight KL 690 CUN 18:20 – AMS 10:50+1 Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The route will be operated on Boeing 777-200ER aircraft with 320 seats in two classes (34 Business Class/286 Economy) and fares are available from USD 370 each way. The airline will offer 3,264 seats per week on route in eight operations.

Starting in December, KLM will increase capacity on this service with the addition of the Boeing 777-300ER with a capacity of 408 seats in two classes (34 Business Class/374 Economy).

According to data compiled by the AFAC, Netherlands in the fifth largest European market in Mexico between January through August 2022 mobilized 294,309 passengers with an occupancy factor of 86.8% on 1,195 flights, this represents an increase of 147.7% compared to the same period in 2021.

KLM is the leading airline operator in the segment between Mexico and the Netherlands, where it has a 44.8% market share, according to CAIA statistics. This year, the Dutch company has mobilized 154,025 passengers and 4,678.5 tons of cargo on 582 flights. The Aztec country will be the company’s second largest Latin American market after Brazil.

Air France – KLM schedule in Mexico for the northern winter season

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, the French-Dutch group will have an offer of 20,786 seats per week in 60 operations to Mexico for the boreal winter season 2022/2023, this represents an increase of 42% compared to the summer of this year, the route schedule is as follows:

  • Mexico City (MEX): 12 weekly flights on Airbus A350-900 and Boeing 777-300ER 4-class aircraft.
  • Cancun (CUN): daily flights on high-density Boeing 777-300ER.

  • Cancun (CUN): four weekly flights on Boeing 777-200ER/-300ER.
