The International Airport of Las Américas – José Francisco Peña Gómez, which serves Santo Domingo, registered the highest monthly figure of cargo that has passed through this air terminal, having mobilized 15.46 million pounds (around 7 thousand tons) of products during May.
During May, 196 air cargo operations were carried out. Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (AERODOM), the subsidiary concession company of VINCI Airports, reported that this represents a growth of 15% and 11% in relation to the months of May 2019 and 2020 respectively.
This growth in cargo activities occurred after November 2020 when AERODOM inaugurated an exclusive area dedicated to cargo at the airport called Cargo City.
With an investment of more than 1,000 million Dominican pesos (approximately 17.5 million dollars), this new sector will include cargo work in a single space. The aim was to provide cargo service operators with exclusive and direct access to the platform area, including a new warehouse of approximately 6,800 square meters that centralizes all cargo activities.
Around 70% of the commercial air cargo exported through the airport were perishable products (fruits and vegetables), which were transported to the main markets of Europe, the United States and Central America.
Likewise, all shipments of vaccines against COVID-19 that have arrived in the Dominican Republic have transited through the airport.
Las Américas International Airport is the leading airport in cargo activities in the Dominican Republic. Eight airlines dedicated to the transport of air cargo operate from there, including leading companies such as UPS, FedEx and DHL. It is strategically located close to the main logistics nodes, 24 free zone parks and more than 160 exporting companies.
