In a meeting between the Secretaries of the Peruvian Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, it was agreed that the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, and others in Perú, will increase their capacity and have more flight frequencies.

This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism in a tweet this Tuesday.

However, it has not been detailed how it is expected to enable cruise tourism or the new capacity of the airports.

According to LaRepublica, between January and September, 221,746 foreign tourists arrived in Peru for leisure purposes.

Only in September, a total of 50,612 international tourists arrived in the country, representing the highest number recorded since the borders closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic began.

While the national travelers who traveled in the territory, both by air and land, in the mentioned period, were 34.6 million.

Meanwhile, the Corporación Peruana de Aeropuertos y Aviación Comercial (CORPAC) assured that in the first nine months of 2021, the general movement of passengers amounted to 12.7 million, a 33.6% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.

In September, it totaled 2,041,083 passengers, an additional flow of 1.7 million people. 84.3% of the total corresponded to domestic flights and 15.7% by international flights.

With this measure, the Peruvian government seeks to promote tourism activity in the country.

It is important to remember that in an airport, the capacity is measured in the hall. Currently, the terminals managed by Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (APP) have an average capacity of 65% of their normal capacity.

APP is the operator of the airports in Arequipa, Juliaca, Ayacucho, Puerto Maldonado, and Tacna. In October they registered 224,253 passengers on 1,877 flights.

This is due to the reduction of the spacing between passengers, which was previously 1.5 meters, now it is one meter, which gives an additional availability of space per passenger increasing the average capacity almost 20% more than the current one, taking it to more than 60%.

This increase allows an increment of the airport’s capacity and carries out a greater number of simultaneous flights per hour, depending on the airport’s infrastructure.

This will allow, in general, to make more flights at the airport during its operating hours and, consequently, the increase in the number of passengers due to the greater offer that will be opened with this measure.
