Atlas Air completed the process of merging operations with Southern Air. The companies now operate under a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in the name of Atlas, effectively eliminating Southern Air after 22 years of operations.

The acquisition gave Atlas the ability to operate Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft, diversifying its fleet from the Boeing 747 (of which it is the world’s largest operator) and 767. John W. Dietrich, president, and CEO of Atlas Air said, «The acquisition of Southern Air in 2016 enhanced our company’s position by expanding our fleet.

According to Dietrich, the addition of Southern comes with no layoffs, as the former airline’s workforce is very valuable to Atlas’ operation. In this respect, he mentioned that «[the merger] has also brought us a team of highly talented professionals who share our vision. We are pleased that all Southern Air employees will assume their positions at Atlas Air as we complete the last step in the consolidation».

Finally, he thanked the FAA for its cooperation during the process. Dietrich said, «The efforts and vision of the FAA team have been invaluable. We look forward to continuing to work closely together for years to come».
