The Bolivian state-owned company re-launched one of the most popular destinations in Bolivia: Uyuni (UYU), being the gateway to the Great Salt Plateau of the same name. In principle, it will be the sole company serving the tourist city from Cochabamba (CBB).

This comes in the context of a rebuilding of the Bolivian domestic market, where the three main players have been facing several internal crises, slowing down their recovery, provoking Ecojet and Amaszonas to change shareholders. Boliviana de Aviación had to reduce its workforce and several aircraft are undergoing scheduled maintenance.

Indeed, the inaugural flight to Uyuni (UYU) was made in a Bombardier CRJ 200 with a capacity for 50 passengers, being one of the affected models. As they come out of maintenance, other destinations will be reactivated. Last June it had resumed flights to Potosiwith the same aircraft.

Present at this inaugural flight was the mayor of Uyuni, Eduardo Coro, who said that he is in discussions to add a domestic connection to Tarija (TJA) and an international connection to Cusco (CUS), Peru, in order to establish a tourist corridor for international travelers who wish to visit both destinations.

He highlighted that the Gran Salar de Uyuni attracts tourists primarily from China, the United States, Spain, France, and Germany. Furthermore, visitors from Latin America and the Caribbean come from Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Colombia.
