    Spirit Airlines announced that it will add Monterrey International Airport (MTY), in the northwestern Mexican state of Nueva Leon, to its network of destinations.

    It will be connected to Austin/Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Both connections will begin on June 22 with one daily flight, operated by Airbus A320ceo/neo aircraft configured in 8-seat «Big Front» and 174-seat economy, giving Monterrey 5,096 seats per week.

    These new services to MTY represent an inland expansion of the ultra low-cost carrier to serve VFR traffic, given that it already has a presence in beach destinations.

    Spirit will provide the only nonstop flight between Austin and Monterrey, providing a crucial link between the two growing industrial cities. In Houston, it will complement the robust network that provides nonstop service to Houstonians to seven international destinations, in addition to 17 domestic destinations.

    Under Spirit Airlines’ booking system, travelers from Monterrey will be able to connect in Austin or Houston with a single reservation to Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Philadelphia, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Oakland, San Diego and Tampa.

    Monterrey (MTY) is one of the destinations with the highest O&D demand between Mexico and the United States. In 2021 the capital of Nueva Leon had five destinations from Texas: Houston – Intercontinental (IAH), Dallas / Fort Worth (DFW), San Antonio (SAT), McAllen (MFE) and Harlingen (HRL).

    Data obtained by Aviacionline through the Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) indicate that between January and November 2021 between Monterrey (MTY) and Texas, 903,025 passengers were mobilized in 10,223 air operations.

    Spirit Airlines in Mexico

    Spirit Airlines first entered Mexico in 2003, when it made its first flight to Cancun International Airport (CUN). Continued to invest in the country, adding Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) in 2012 and Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) in 2021.

    The last two airports opened are connected to Los Angeles, Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.     During 2021, the company transported 881,879 passengers between the two countries, positioning it as the seventh largest U.S. carrier in that market, accounting for 2% of traffic, according to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency. Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation.

    According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, Spirit will offer 1,386,156 seats to the four Mexican destinations by September 2022.
