EasyJet, one of Europe’s leading low-cost airlines, reopened its seasonal bases at the airports of Faro (FAO), Malaga (AGP), and Palma de Mallorca (PMI). With twice the number of seats offered compared to 2021 and eleven new routes from the three bases, the airline is strengthening its commitment to the European summer season.
It will offer 2.8 million seats to and from Palma de Mallorca, while in Malaga the offer will be 1.9 million. This represents an increase of 115% and 150%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2021. Meanwhile, it will offer 1.67 million seats to Faro, Portugal.
The fleet based at the three airports will thus increase by 70% compared to pre-pandemic levels. The increased movement will also contribute to local employment: it will create 120 new jobs in Malaga and Palma de Mallorca, in addition to 30 in Faro. EasyJet currently employs around 500 people in Spain and 550 in Portugal.
Route network
The route network from seasonal bases will also be expanded. The company has good forecasts due to the high demand for leisure travel and expects to reach occupancy levels close to those of 2019. There will be 20 connections from Faro, 17 from Malaga, and 27 from Palma de Mallorca. In total, there will be eleven more routes than those available in 2021.
In this regard, Javier Gándara, EasyJet’s country manager for Southern Europe, said: «We are prepared for what we believe will be a very strong summer». «Faro, Palma, and Malaga have always been some of our customers’ favorite destinations and we have worked over the winter to adjust and improve our offerings across our network of seasonal bases», he added.
The executive also highlighted the importance of the new connections for the recovery of the industry. «With more capacity and new routes, we are ready to play our part in supporting the recovery of local tourism», he concluded.
