Miami International Airport (MIA) recorded its all-time record for passenger numbers in 2022. In total, more than 50.6 million used the terminal’s services during the year. This way, it surpassed the traffic level of Orlando International Airport (MCO) and became the busiest airport in Florida.

Compared to the previous year, the airport welcomed 13.3 million more passengers (year-on-year growth of 35%). The figure represents an increase of nearly 10% compared to 2019, the last full year prior to the start of the pandemic, when the airport welcomed 45.9 million passengers.

«Passenger growth represents tourism revenue, job creation, and expanded opportunities in Miami-Dade County, making all county residents proud», said Daniella Levine Cava, County Mayor.

Passenger air travel

Of the total passengers transiting the air terminal, 29.3 million departed or arrived on domestic flights. In 2019, Miami International Airport had reported 23.5 million users in domestic operations.

On the other hand, international flights handled 21.3 million passengers. International traffic remained below the 2019 figures, but exceeded by 8.3 million users the numbers of 2021, a year in which operations were largely impacted by mobility restrictions imposed by many countries.

Miami International Airport ranked first in the United States in terms of international passenger transport and tenth by total number of users.

Air cargo transport

According to data provided by the airport management, record of 2.7 million tonnes of cargo that had been set in 2021 was equalled in 2022. Of that total, 2.2 million tonnes were international shipments and another 500.000 tonnes were domestic operations.

Miami International Airport ranked fourth in the United States in terms of air cargo transport and tenth globally.
