Aena yesterday signed the concession contract for São Paulo-Congonhas Airport, the second busiest airport in Brazil, and ten other air terminals in the South American country.

The Spanish company had been awarded the management in a public auction in August 2022, after making a bid of 2.450 million reais (478 million euros, which added to the commitments indicated in the bidding documents brought the total amount of the operation to 4.089 million reais).

Aena to manage eleven airports in Brazil for thirty years

The agreement, made through the subsidiary Aena Desarrollo Internacional, stipulates the management of the airports for a period of thirty years, with the possibility of extending this period for a further five years. Investments of 5.89 billion reais (1.05 billion euros) are expected, 73% of this total until 2028.

Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the authority in charge of regulating the activity in the country, must now ratify the contract. Once the transition process process is completed, Aena will start to manage them progressively. The transition is expected to be completed during the third quarter of this year.

«One of the company’s main objectives is to deepen its internationalisation and, with this operation, Aena becomes the manager of the largest network of concessioned airports in Brazil», said Maurici Lucena, Chairman and CEO of Aena.

The eleven new airports will join the six that Aena already manages in the country, under the Aena Brasil brand, from 2019: Recife (REC), Maceió (MCZ), João Pessoa (JPA), Aracaju (AJU), Campina Grande (CPV) and Juazeiro do Norte (JDO).
