Lufthansa será cliente lanzamiento del Diamond eDA40 eléctrico

Lufthansa Aviation Training and Diamon Aircraft Austria have signed a Letter of Intent to begin joint development and exploration of sustainable flight training devices. This agreement includes testing of the all-electric eD40, the intent to purchase the eD40 and the analysis of the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

This agreement demonstrates Diamond Aircraft and Lufthansa Aviation Training’s (LAT) commitment to the objectives of Europe’s Green Deal and also to the Sustainable Aviation Program of the European Union’s Aviation Safety Agency.

With the announcement of the new eD40, Diamond reinforces its commitment and forward-looking stance on flying with the least possible impact on the environment. Diamond has started to take this stance since the production of piston-powered aircraft equipped with fuel-efficient, unleaded engines.

On Lufthansa’s side, this agreement aligns with the #MakeChangeFly program, which aims to halve carbon emissions across the group by 2030 compared to 2019. And by 2050 to reach zero emissions.

“We have enjoyed a long and trusted partnership with Diamond Aircraft. Diamond Aircraft’s fuel-efficient DA40 and DA42 models are already operating very successfully at our flight schools in Rostock (Germany) and Grenchen (Switzerland). I am very pleased that with the signing of the letter of intent for the all-electric eDA40, we are jointly opening a pioneering chapter in the topic of sustainability.” Said Matthias Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Aviation Training.

The new eDA40s will be tested at LAT’s training base in Grenchen. These tests will yield results that will allow further development of the e-aircraft for training and explore the best options for a mixed operation between eDA40 and DA40 NG.

Lufthansa has expressed its interest in becoming a launch customer for the eDA40 for the region and incorporating these new electric aircraft into its fleet. Further details of the purchase transaction will be announced as time goes on and the development of this agreement progresses.

“We are excited and honored to announce the renowned Lufthansa Aviation Training as our launch customer for our all-electric eDA40 and as a strong partner for an important and trendsetting collaboration for a better tomorrow.” Stated Liqun (Frank) Zhang, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Austria.

Moreover, both companies will work together on the analysis and development of the use of SAF fuel for the entire range of Diamond piston aircraft.

Testing is expected to begin in late 2023 or early 2024 at LAT’s training base in Grenchen, Switzerland. All will be subject to obtaining the corresponding technical authorization.
