Aena reported that during May, its Spanish airports handled 25,476,066 passengers, representing a 14.4% increase compared to the previous year and a 3.4% increase compared to 2019. This marked the fifth consecutive month of exceeding pre-pandemic figures.
Out of the total, 25,417,978 were commercial passengers, and out of these, 25,417,978 belonged to the segment of international flights, a 14.9% increase compared to May 2022, and 8,082,851 were domestic flights, marking a growth of 13.5%.
In terms of aircraft movement, the network handled 215,257 operations, an increase of 3.1% compared to May 2022.
Air cargo, on the other hand, recorded a 9.7% increase compared to May 2022, with 87,583 tons of goods handled.
«The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport recorded the highest number of passengers in the fifth month of the year with 5,053,366, representing a growth of 16.8% compared to May of the previous year«, Aena detailed.
«It was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 4,477,108 (+17.2% compared to 2022); Palma de Mallorca, with 3,421,182 (+9.7%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 2,151,259 (+16.1%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 1,500,278 (+18%); Gran Canaria, with 998,304 (+10.7%) and Ibiza, with 971,129 passengers, an increase of 13.4% compared to the number of passengers in May 2022«, they continued.
Considering the number of flight operations, «the airport that recorded the most movements in May was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with a total of 33,359 (+8.6% compared to 2022), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 28,715 flights (+7.7%); Palma de Mallorca, with 24,399 (+0.6%); Málaga-Costa del Sol, with 15,230 (+7.6%); Gran Canaria, with 9,814 (+6.8%); Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, with 9,619 (+9.6%); and Ibiza, with 8,365 landings and takeoffs, 2.2% more compared to May 2022«.
And as for cargo, «the airport that recorded the highest volume of cargo was Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, with 53,364 tons, a 13.1% increase compared to the same month in 2022. Followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 13,498 tons (-1.5% compared to 2022); Zaragoza, which recorded 7,807 tons (-12.7%) and Vitoria, with 6,343 tons, which is 3.2% less than the same month in 2022«.
With these numbers, Aena’s airport network has accumulated almost 103 million passengers between January and May 2023, a figure 27.7% higher than the same period in 2022 and 2.3% more than in 2019.
