In the first hundred days since their introduction, over 200.000 passengers have chosen the «green fares» offered by Lufthansa Group when purchasing their flights.

The new product has been available since February 15 for customers booking itineraries within Europe and to Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, operated by Lufthansa, Eurowings Discover, Austrian Airlines, SWISS, Edelweiss, Air Dolomiti, and Brussels Airlines.

Lufthansa Group says «green fares» are a success

The Lufthansa Group has stated that the results from these first hundred days represent a success and demonstrate the «growing demand for more sustainable travel offers.»

According to the company in a press release, the route with the highest number of bookings of this kind was the Zurich to London journey operated by SWISS. It was followed by the Hamburg to Munich route covered by Lufthansa.

Carbon offsetting is already included

The «green fares» already include the carbon offsetting associated with a specific flight. This sets them apart from most of the policies adopted recently by various carriers. Currently, airlines often include this mechanism as an additional option with an extra charge.

According to Lufthansa Group, the money is used to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and invest in environmental protection projects. It is also allocated to fleet modernization, a key aspect in improving operational efficiency and reducing emissions.

Furthermore, selecting these fares when booking a ticket allows passengers to earn additional miles for frequent flyer programmes across all airlines and to make one free reservation change.
