Lufthansa resumes commercial flights with the Airbus A380

After lengthy storage in the desert, Lufthansa’s premier Airbus A380 has resumed commercial services on June 1. The inaugural non-stop flight was between Munich and Boston, replacing the previous Airbus A340-600s operation. The last flight of this superjumbo was on March 28, 2020, on the Frankfurt – Bangkok route.

In 2019, the German airline had scheduled the A380 to fly between Munich and Massachusetts during the 2020 summer season. However, these plans were halted due to the global COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

The event marking the arrival of the superjumbo included notable guests: Matthew Hatfield, Director of Air Route Development, Massachusetts Port Authority; Tal Muscal, Group Communications Director, Americas – Lufthansa Group; Peter Köser, Lufthansa Group Director of Ground Operations for the United States and Canada; Dirk Janzen, Lufthansa Group Vice President Area Management Americas; and Dominik Hofer, Lufthansa Group Station Manager Boston.

Flight LH 424 was conducted on A380 registered D-AIMK, named «Dusseldorf». It departed from Munich-Franz Josef Strauss International Airport (MUC) at 16:01 local time and arrived at Logan International Airport (BOS) at 17:23, after seven hours and 22 minutes.

Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 Schedule to Boston

  • Munich – Boston Flight LH 424 departs MUC at 15:35 and arrives BOS at 17:50 daily.
  • Boston – Munich Flight LH 425 departs BOS at 20:05 and arrives MUC at 09:25+1 daily.
Route and Aircraft Information
  • From June 1 to June 18 and July 5 to July 16, Lufthansa schedules five flights per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).
  • The German airline’s A380s can accommodate 509 passengers across four classes (8 First Class/78 Business Class/52 Premium Economy/371 Economy).

Besides Boston, Lufthansa will also commence the A380 service between Munich and New York (JFK) from July 4. Moreover, they plan to deploy the superjumbo on routes from Munich to Bangkok and Los Angeles for the 2023/2024 winter season.

According to Aviacionline data from Eurostat statistics, in 2022, 147,376 passengers and 5,006.6 tons of cargo were transported between Munich and Boston. This signifies an 80% and 78% increase in passenger and freight traffic, respectively.

Lufthansa becomes the second airline to operate the Airbus A380 at Logan International Airport, joining British Airways’ services from London – Heathrow.
