On June 21, Eurowings‘ first «Mallorca Airbus«, a new Airbus A321neo registered as «D-AEEA«, landed at Düsseldorf International Airport. With this addition, the German leisure airline is continuing its plans to modernize its fleet and is taking delivery of the eighth of a total of 13 new aircraft from the European manufacturer.
The A321neo is the largest aircraft in the Eurowings fleet and has a capacity of 232 passengers, which will serve the famous «Mallorca Shuttle«. For the summer season, the new aircraft will fly with increased frequency to the Balearic island to meet the strong demand for the airline’s most popular destination.
The island capital, is served by the Lufthansa Group airline with a schedule of more than 400 flights a week during the high season from 25 destinations in Europe.
«Our inbound bookings are clear: people want to fly again on vacations. With the A321neo, our customers fly with the most modern, efficient and quietest medium-haul aircraft in the world«, says Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.
A new, more sustainable way of flying
Compared to its «ceo» (current engine option) predecessor, the Airbus A321neo generation of aircraft have a 50% reduction in noise footprint and consume 15% less kerosene, with equally reduced carbon emissions.
Eurowings is the first airline in the Lufthansa Group to equip its 13 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft with CFM’s LEAP (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion) engine. The new, much larger engines can save a further 3,700 tons of carbon dioxide per aircraft per year.
Due to the lower fuel consumption, the neo also has an additional 500 kilometers of range over its predecessor. The leisure company has ordered a total of eight 180-seat Airbus A320neo and five Airbus A321neo. By 2022, Eurowing will operate a total of seven A320neo aircraft and expects to add another by 2024. In addition, the airline is expected to take delivery of another three Airbus A321neo during 2023.
What will happen to the «Mallorca Airbus»?
Upon landing, the D-AEEA was officially handed over to Eurowings Technik. The technical operation in Düsseldorf, with some 120 employees, will complement the rest of the airline’s equipment in the coming weeks. The first commercial passenger flight is scheduled for August to Mallorca.
