GlobalX Launches New UrbanX Air Subsidiary for Urban Air Mobility in South Florida

Global Crossing Airlines Group, Inc. (GlobalX), based in Miami, has today announced the creation of a new subsidiary, UrbanX Air, aimed at developing Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in South Florida. This development is contingent on receiving approvals from the FAA and DOT. UAM involves the use of small, electrically powered aircraft for short-distance travel in urban and suburban areas.

Ed Wegel, GlobalX Chairman and CEO, has appointed Lucy Morillo, Esq., as President and CEO of UrbanX. Morillo’s background includes roles in law, business, private equity, and the non-profit sector. Her appointment is noteworthy in the aviation and urban air mobility industry, where Hispanic female CEOs are relatively rare.

Morillo’s responsibilities include launching UrbanX and developing the UAM ecosystem in South Florida. Her involvement in various aviation and transportation organizations is part of her long-standing professional commitment.

Wegel commented on Morillo’s appointment, saying, “She brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm from a range of industries with a proven track record of building stakeholder engagement and leading campaigns in many sectors.”

In 2022, GlobalX expressed interest in purchasing 200 electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) from Eve Air Mobility, a subsidiary of Embraer. This move suggests GlobalX’s ambition to introduce eVTOL technology to South Florida, with the first delivery expected in 2026.

Morillo aims to operate UrbanX under a social enterprise business model, focusing on collaboration with local governments to ensure community-wide benefits. “In coordination with Miami-Dade County and other local stakeholders, we will forge meaningful collaborations through a public-private partnership to ensure this cutting-edge technology lifts the entire community,” Morillo stated.

In addition to her new role, Morillo is a principal and co-founder of LM & Associates, and co-owner and publisher of S Revista. Her previous roles include leadership positions at the University of Miami and Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The completion of UrbanX’s plans with Eve Air Mobility is subject to finalizing definitive agreements and necessary regulatory approvals.
