#TBT: Iberia flights between Spain and South America in 1987

Iberia, in the southernmost part of the American continent, had flights to Asunción, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro and Santiago de Chile in mid-1987. Operations were carried out from Santiago de Compostela, Madrid and Las Palmas with Boeing 747-200 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 aircraft.

Argentina was the Spanish airline’s main South American market, with four services a week. Brazil and Chile followed with three, Paraguay had two and Uruguay one.

Currently, Iberia has flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, but not to the Paraguayan capital’s Silvio Pettirossi Airport. Services to Asunción were suspended in 1996, and have not returned since then. The only connection between Paraguay and Spain is offered by Air Europa, five times a week on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets.
