Volocopter has successfully conducted the first multi-level flight tests for its electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicle (eVTOL). These tests were carried out using a manned Volocopter 2X and represent a milestone as the first flight test of an eVTOL at a major airport.

The test flights took place at the Tampa International Airport (TPA), which stands out as one of the top-rated airports according to the North America Airport Satisfaction Study by J.D. Power. The testing campaign included aircraft takeoff and landing trials as well as performance tests in local environmental conditions.

These tests were witnessed by special guests, including Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Purdue, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, and congressional leaders supporting the growth of the UAM industry, along with media representatives.

The Future of Sustainable Urban Mobility

Volocopter plans to commence commercial services with a certified and shared air taxi service in the heart of major cities worldwide. The quiet, safe, and sustainable operations of a certified eVTOL will not only provide efficient transportation and reduce congestion but also drive decarbonization in the aviation industry.

In the United States, Volocopter announced a partnership with the Bristow Group to initiate eVTOL operations, selecting the state of Florida for the location of the initial flights. Continuous flight testing campaigns are critical steps in building an efficient UAM ecosystem with community support.

Furthermore, to establish the ecosystem in which eVTOLs will operate, Volocopter forged a partnership with Urban Movement Labs in Los Angeles since 2021. This partnership brings together infrastructure developers, operators, air traffic authorities, and lawmakers to promote this new form of electric urban aviation on a larger scale in the United States.

Joe Lopano, CEO of Tampa International Airport, expressed: “Tampa International Airport has always embraced innovation and forward-thinking planning, and we have already identified a potential site for urban air mobility as part of our Master Plan. This technology has the potential to transform the aviation and transportation industry, and we are excited to partner with Volocopter as we present and envision the incredible possibilities ahead.”

In addition, Volocopter CEO Dirk Hoke remarked: “Flying at a large and active airport always presents numerous challenges, but we have demonstrated that our aircraft is safe, quiet, and effectively useful in a city like Tampa. Volocopter sees this as a starting point for entering service in the United States, and we will return to showcase our ongoing progress. We appreciate the support from all attending guests that made this first eVTOL flight in Florida a success.”
