Norwegian Air Shuttle and Cargolux Airlines have closed significant agreements for the purchase of fossil-free aviation fuels, e-fuel. Both airlines have signed with Norsk e-Fuel, a key promoter of the alternative energy source.
Additionally, Norwegian will join the group of shareholders of Norsk e-Fuel, which will now be led by the current shareholder and renowned engineering, procurement, and construction company Paul Wurth, a subsidiary of the SMS Group.
Norsk e-Fuel has inked several historic agreements. By securing long-term purchase agreements with Norwegian and Cargolux, and strengthening the shareholder group around Paul Wurth, the company is advancing rapidly.
Norsk e-Fuel is initiating the industrialization of e-Fuel production in Mosjøen, Norway, and will begin supplying e-Fuels to the aviation industry in 2026. Backed by a robust network of shareholders and partners, the company plans to increase production with two additional plants by 2030.
Karl Hauptmeier, CEO of Norsk e-Fuel, stated, “We have ambitious plans to increase e-Fuel production as soon as possible and supply non-fossil fuels to the aviation sector. The commitment from our new partners Cargolux and Norwegian, and the reaffirmed support from founding partner and shareholder Paul Wurth, not only demonstrate confidence in our mission, business concept, and team.”
“They also show an understanding of the critical role of e-Fuels in shaping a future for aviation free from fossil fuels, both in Norway and throughout Europe,” added Hauptmeier.
The total volume of the purchase agreements covers more than 140,000 tons of fuel supply. Additionally, the two companies will provide strategic support for the development of two additional production facilities by 2030.
Richard Forson, CEO and President of Cargolux said: “Cargolux is proud to join the Norsk e-Fuel project. E-Fuel will be a fundamental pillar to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 in aviation.”
“E-Fuels are based on abundant raw materials like carbon dioxide, and, when produced with green electricity, this project will provide one of the largest greenhouse gas savings compared to conventional aircraft fuel. We look forward to offering our customers the opportunity to voluntarily enhance their sustainability initiatives by using e-fuels for their shipments starting from late 2026,” added Forson.
Meanwhile, Norwegian’s CEO, Geir Karlsen, expressed: “We welcome the collaboration opportunities with Norsk e-Fuel. Together, we embark on a journey towards the next generation of fossil-free aviation fuels.”
“These sustainable aviation fuels will be in high demand in the coming years. The agreement involves an investment of approximately 5 million euros and ensures early access for Norway to the product. The use of fossil-free aviation fuels is key to achieving our goal of reducing carbon emissions by 45% by 2030,” added Karlsen.
The shareholder group expanded by Norwegian will now be led by Paul Wurth. He has supported Norsk e-Fuel since its inception and has now decided to increase his investment in the company by an additional 5.5 million euros. The commitment has been welcomed by existing shareholders, as well as the management and team of Norsk e-Fuel.
