Asur will expand the commercial apron of the Cozumel International Airport (CZM), increasing its capacity with eight new boarding gates. The project will require an investment of approximately 58 million Mexican pesos.
The concessionaire aims to add two positions to accommodate category C aircraft, which have a wingspan of 24 to 36 meters. This category includes aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families.
The Cozumel airport is the third most important in the state of Quintana Roo, behind Cancún (CUN) and Tulum (TQO), with a passenger terminal covering an area of 14,000 m². With the commercial apron expansion, the terminal will cover nearly 17,000 m².
According to data shared by the Secretariat of Tourism, the Cozumel International Airport received 77,678 passengers between January and September of this year, representing an increase of 38.97% compared to the same period in 2023. The new expansion is expected to enable the terminal to meet the growing demand from both domestic and international passengers.
The works to be carried out include clearing the land designated for the apron expansion, filling existing caverns in the area, constructing the new ramp and stormwater drainage systems. Additionally, the marking of taxiways and apron boundaries will be completed, two 20-meter-high lighting poles will be installed, and signage will be placed for ground vehicle and aircraft traffic.
The construction of the new apron will generate 127 new temporary and permanent jobs, including positions for heavy machinery operators, surveyors, security guards, engineers, architects, construction workers, and supervisors.
The Cozumel International Airport connects to 14 destinations, four domestic and ten international, operated by eleven airlines.
