Aena launches €19.875M expansion of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport
Aena has launched the €19.875 million expansion project for Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, focusing on increasing capacity, enhancing passenger experience, and incorporating advanced technology. The initiative includes terminal expansion, a new general aviation terminal, and upgraded security systems, positioning the airport for future growth as one of Spain's busiest hubs
Aena has launched the expansion project for Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, aiming to address future traffic demand, enhance passenger service quality, and optimize operational efficiency. The company has issued a tender for drafting the projects that will define the necessary works in the terminal and movement areas.
According to Aena, this renovation includes expanding the terminal building, creating a new general aviation terminal, reconfiguring the aircraft parking apron, and adding new commercial and service areas. The drafting of the project has a tender cost of €19.875 million and forms part of the Airport Regulation Document (DORA) III, covering the 2027–2031 period.
Between January and November 2024, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport handled 17.2 million passengers—16.8% more than in 2023 and 21.1% above 2019 levels. This growth places it as the fifth busiest airport in Spain. From Alicante, flights connect to 109 cities, including 11 domestic destinations and others across Europe and North Africa.
Expansion of the terminal building and advanced technology
A central element of the expansion is the enlargement of the terminal building. The current boarding pier will be extended over the former Terminal 1 and the general aviation terminal. This new pier will handle non-Schengen traffic and include centralized border controls that meet European Union regulations. Additionally, new contact gates will improve the passenger and airline experience.
Aena highlights the incorporation of advanced technology in security controls. New systems include Automated Tray Return Systems (ATRS), which speed up hand luggage inspections, and Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDS CB), enabling baggage screening without removing liquids or electronic devices.
Works in movement areas and complementary services
The project also includes remodeling the apron in front of the new pier and reconfiguring areas dedicated to general aviation. Additional works will be carried out on parking lots, offices, and climate and energy systems to adapt them to the new facilities.
The proposed investments will be discussed through a regulated process involving airlines, government agencies, and the regional Airport Coordination Committee. Once approved, the projects will be included in Aena’s investment plan for 2027–2031.
In addition to Alicante-Elche, Aena is advancing with plans to expand Valencia Airport.
