airBaltic unveils its 50th Airbus A220-300 at Airbus facilities in Mirabel, Canada. This aircraft features a special livery inspired by the Latvian flag and elements representing the three Baltic states: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. As Europe’s largest A220 operator and the second largest worldwide, this milestone further solidifies airBaltic's position in the global aviation market.
"Over eight years ago, we became the global launch operator of the Airbus A220-300. Over time, this aircraft type has become the backbone of our operations," said Martin Gauss, President and CEO of airBaltic. "This iconic aircraft completes our initial order and moves us closer to our goal of a single-type fleet of 100 A220-300s, with plans to double its size by 2030."
Benoît Schultz, CEO of Airbus Canada, highlighted airBaltic's significant role: "airBaltic is the largest A220 customer in Europe and the largest A220-300 operator globally. The airline trusts the A220 for its efficiency, spacious cabin, and top ‘Net Promoter Scores’ among passengers. With our A220 fleet, we have connected more than 160 million passengers worldwide."
The unique livery design was completed in just 18 days using 21 colors, brought to life through an innovative stencil overlay technique. This was the first time the Airbus A220 paint shop in Mirabel, Canada, used this advanced method for layering colors.
The 50th aircraft, registered as "YL-ABX," is expected to join airBaltic's fleet in February 2025. The livery was selected through a design contest organized in the last quarter of 2023. A total of 840 proposals were submitted, with 28,000 members of the airBaltic Club frequent flyer program voting to shortlist 21 designs. airBaltic then chose the top three, reflecting the Baltic region’s identity. The winning design, which received 30% of the final votes, now adorns this landmark aircraft.
