Argentina grants Avianca Ecuador fifth freedom rights on new routes
Avianca Ecuador has been authorized to operate regular flights connecting Quito and Guayaquil with five Argentine cities, including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Mendoza, under fifth freedom rights.
The Undersecretariat of Air Transport of the Ministry of Economy of Argentina formalized on January 13 the authorization for Avianca Ecuador to operate new regular international passenger and cargo transport services on routes connecting Ecuador with five Argentine cities. The measure, established in Resolution 3/2025, was published in the Official Gazette and outlines the authorized routes.
Avianca Ecuador will operate flights from Quito and/or Guayaquil to Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, and Rosario, with layovers in Bogotá or Medellín, Colombia. Additionally, the airline has been granted fifth freedom rights, allowing it to transport passengers and cargo between intermediate stops and the final destination in Argentina. For Buenos Aires, flights may operate from both Ezeiza International Airport and Jorge Newbery Airport.
The resolution is based on the 2006 Air Services Agreement between Argentina and Ecuador and the Minutes of the Bilateral Consultation Meeting held in May 2024. According to reports, the airline fulfilled all legal and administrative requirements set by Argentine authorities to operate the routes.
“The goal of the Open Skies policy promoted by the National Government is to foster growth in the air transport sector, allowing more companies to operate new routes, enhancing connectivity, increasing frequencies, and adding new destinations with competitive fares to enable more people to fly,” the Secretariat of Transport stated in a press release.
