A large-scale electrical supply interruption affected extensive areas of Spain, Portugal, and the south of France this Monday, causing severe disruptions in the operations of key airports such as Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat. The incident, which began around noon CEST, left millions of users without service and tested the airport infrastructure.
According to Aviación Digital, critical systems in the airports, including baggage management, security checks, and runway operations, suffered the direct consequences of the power cut. Aena, the managing entity of Spanish airports, reported failures in essential equipment at Barcelona-El Prat Airport. This situation resulted in delays in baggage delivery and prolonged waits for travelers. Testimonies shared on social media describe stopped baggage carousels and, in some cases, the need for passengers to handle their luggage manually.
At Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, one of the most affected, flight cancellations and delays were registered as a result of the interruption in navigation and air traffic control systems. Aena communicated that its staff is working to restore normality as soon as possible, although without specifying a specific timeframe for the total recovery of services. At 14:20 local time, Aena updated the situation status, informing that the airports in its network are operational with contingency electrical systems, and that the impact on flights will depend on the difficulties of passengers and crews in arriving, so those who have to fly should consult with their respective airlines about the status of services.
