Carrasco International Airport, Uruguay’s main air terminal, reached a historic milestone in January 2025, recording 206,544 passengers, according to official data released on Thursday. This figure represents a 2.6% increase compared to January 2024, when 201,304 travelers passed through the airport.
Growth Driven by Tourism and Expanded Connectivity
According to the airport’s administration—operated by Corporación América Airports—the rise in passenger numbers is attributed to increased tourism during the summer season and expanded connectivity, which included the reactivation of domestic flights to Salto. Additionally, the high availability of seats contributed to the surge in travelers.
“This milestone reflects the great collaborative effort between both private and public sector stakeholders to strengthen the industry’s recovery,” said Federico Cabrera, Operations and Passenger Experience Manager at Aeropuertos Uruguay. He emphasized that the aviation industry is a key driver of economic development, impacting multiple sectors.

Increased Airline Operations and Regional Hub Consolidation
Throughout January, the airport operated with 12 airlines, offering 162 weekly flights and 15 direct connections—including international and domestic destinations. While the administration did not disclose the most in-demand routes, they highlighted that the surge in traffic reinforces Carrasco’s position as a regional hub.
This record comes amid a gradual global recovery in air traffic, which, as of 2024, had yet to return to pre-pandemic levels in several regions. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Uruguay’s recovery has been faster than the South American average, driven by tourism and increased connectivity with Europe and North America.
