Embraer signed today a contract with an undisclosed customer for the sale of two C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircrafts. The contract also includes a comprehensive training and support package as well as the supply of spare parts.
The aircraft will be specially configured to meet customers’ requirements, which include tactical transport of troops and vehicles, humanitarian aid, disaster management and medical evacuation.

The new customer is the tenth nation to select the C-390 after Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Slovakia. The C-390 represents the next generation of military airlift with multi-mission capability and interoperability built by design.

Since entering operation with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, the Portuguese Air Force in 2023, and most recently with the Hungarian Air Force in 2024, the C-390 has proven its capacity, reliability, and performance. The current fleet of aircraft in operation has accumulated more than 15,500 flight hours, with a mission capability rate of 93% and mission completion rates above 99%, demonstrating exceptional productivity in the category.
The C-390 can carry more payload (26 tons) compared to other medium-sized military transport aircraft and flies faster (470 knots) and farther, being capable of performing a wide range of missions such as transporting and dropping cargo and troops, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, and humanitarian missions, operating on temporary or unpaved runways such as packed earth, soil, and gravel. The aircraft configured with air-to-air refueling equipment, with the designation KC-390, has already proven its aerial refueling capacity both as a tanker and as a receiver, in this case by receiving fuel from another KC-390 using pods installed under the wings.

Embraer sells two C-390 Millennium transport aircrafts to undisclosed customer

On the afternoon of Sunday, December 15, the C-130 Hercules (registration TC-69) landed at El Palomar Air Base, transporting the airframe of the first F-16 fighter jet for the Argentine Air Force (FAA). This arrival marks a milestone in the FAA&#8217;s process of restoring its supersonic capability.

Along with the airframe, the Hercules brought the final components needed to assemble the F-16BM Block 10, which will be put together at the Tandil Air Base, located in the province of Buenos Aires. This base houses the VI Air Brigade, from which the 24 F-16 MLU jets acquired from Denmark will operate.
The transfer of components from Aalborg, Denmark, to Argentina<a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/12/f-16-for-argentina-c-130-hercules-transports-components-from-denmark/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> began on December 3</a>. For this operation, the C-130 Hercules with registration TC-66 «Polo Sur» was used. Among the items transported was the Pratt &amp; Whitney F100 engine, which powers all variants of the F-16 until the introduction of the «common engine bay,» a design that allows the use of both the P&amp;W F100 (Block 32) and the General Electric F110 (Block 30) in F-16 C/D models of Blocks 30/32.
The aircraft transported in successive C-130 flights is F-16 «number 25», a two-seat F-16B Block 10 model. Although this unit is not airworthy, it will play a key role in the training and development of technical and operational personnel at the base. This aircraft will be assigned to the future Training and Improvement Center of the VI Air Brigade, whose construction is expected to begin soon.

The assembly of the first Argentine F-16 is expected to begin shortly, with technical assistance from Danish personnel. The goal is to hold an official presentation ceremony for the aircraft before the end of the year. However, the Argentine Ministry of Defense has not yet confirmed a specific date for this event.

The Latin American aerospace giant Embraer and the Brazilian Army signed today at Mostra BID, the National Defense and Security Fair, a contract worth R$ 102 million (almost USD 17 million) for the delivery of a unit of the SABER M200 Vigilante medium and low range air defense radar, already in its serial production configuration.
The process also contemplates the continuity of the technical and operational evaluation of the equipment and its future use in the Brazilian Army&#8217;s anti-aircraft artillery units.

The equipment uses advanced locally produced signal processing technology to detect and track positions, aircraft trajectories, and classify airborne targets, providing greater autonomy to the ground forces in relation to their air defense systems. Additionally, it is equipped with an integrated power generator, making it easier to transport both by land and air.
The Brazilian Army will be the first operator of the radar, which is aimed at low- and medium-altitude air defense. Its use within the Army will serve as a reference to explore application opportunities for the benefit of the other Brazilian Armed Forces and export markets.

The SABER M200 was designed to be used as an early warning system for anti-aircraft artillery units, but can also be used for air traffic control and border surveillance missions.
<h3>Moving towards the SABER M200 Multimission</h3>
In addition, Embraer and Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (Finep) signed a contract worth R$ 147 million (approximately USD 24.3 million) to complete the development of new technologies to be implemented in the SABER M200 Multimission radar system.

It is a transportable tactical equipment, optimized for medium-altitude air defense, surveillance and early warning with identification of friend or foe (IFF) and military air traffic control. Embraer seeks to expand its operational capabilities in order to integrate them with future medium-range ground-to-air defense systems to be incorporated by the Brazilian Armed Forces.

For the Argentine Army (EA), the joint Czech-Israeli  Pandur II 8&#215;8 armored vehicles, considered superior to the US Striker, are being evaluated. In addition, Petri showed interest in 155mm ATMOS self-propelled artillery systems, new ARAD 7 assault rifles and the possibility of manufacturing Israeli tank ammunition in Argentina.
<h3>Drones and loitering munitions</h3>
It seems that the tests conducted by the EA of a <a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2022/12/argentina-buys-hero-30-and-hero-120-loitering-munitions-from-israel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">small initial batch</a> of HERO 120 (against armor or fortifications) and HERO 30 (against infantry) loitering munitions proved satisfactory, because there would be interest in deepening their implementation through a new procurement.

In parallel, the Argentine Ministry of Defense is reportedly showing strong interest in the purchase of MALE (Medium Altitude, Long Endurance) unmanned aerial vehicles for the armed forces. Among the options are IAI&#8217;s Heron Mk II or Elbit&#8217;s Hermes 900 systems. These systems would be acquired jointly by the Air Force and the Navy, which seek to improve their ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) patrolling capacity over vast maritime and land areas, with a flight range of more than 24 hours.

The Israeli proposal includes a batch of Sikorsky UH-60L Black Hawk helicopters, modernized by Elbit Systems. These aircraft could complement the three <a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/12/argentine-army-launches-tender-to-purchase-used-black-hawk-helicopters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used UH-60s</a> that the Army plans to acquire via FMS (Foreign Military Sales).

Finally, it is time to talk about the most onerous purchase intention. Minister Petri visited the offices of Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to learn about its vast portfolio of capabilities, including air, land, naval and even cybernetic defense. But the main Argentine interest would be in the Spyder surface-to-air defense systems, since negotiations have already begun for the joint purchase of a pair of batteries. The Army is interested in a Spyder SR (short range) or ER (extended range) battery, while the Air Force is considering the Spyder LR (long range). These systems can employ air-to-air missiles such as the Python 5 and I-Derby, which have proven combat effectiveness and can also be used on airborne platforms.

This is F-16 “number 25” of those acquired from Denmark, an F-16B two-seater Block 10 model which, although not flight-capable, will be crucial for the training and development of technical and operational personnel. Preparations for this complex transfer began in late October, with the arrival in Denmark of a technical team from the Material Supply Directorate (DAM) of the General Material Directorate (DGM) of the FAA. This team, along with personnel from the F-16M Program and the Maintenance Service for Defense (Forsvarets Vedligeholdelses Tjeneste – FVT), the maintenance unit of the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF), worked on the preparation of the F-16B for safe transport. They also consolidated the logistical equipment destined for the aforementioned Training Center.

In the coming days, the FAA will send another C-130 Hercules to Denmark to bring the remaining F-16 components. Once in the country, the aircraft will be assembled at the facilities of the VI Air Brigade with the assistance of specialized Danish personnel. The goal is to officially unveil this acquisition before the end of the year in a ceremony that will mark a milestone for the Argentine Air Force: the restoration of supersonic capability.

F-16 for Argentina: C-130 Hercules Transports Components from Denmark

The Argentine Army launched a tender for the acquisition of three used Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. This purchase, which includes a comprehensive set of services and spare parts, seeks to provide the Army Aviation Directorate with multi-purpose aircraft, ready to operate in highly demanding scenarios.
The tender, identified with process number 84/7-0942-LPU24, was published today in the official website Comprar (<a href="https://comprar.gob.ar/PLIEGO/VistaPreviaPliegoCiudadano.aspx?qs=BQoBkoMoEhyoaHIzuPUojdm3KDXKordV9UHn8z96NB|pQa6q7peDxpmJCRG0PoK60QtAXq/c/Hv3SA2zD3jo7fFHLziolfKJK/N2Kmz/YyP|69ujuZozMw==v" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comprar.gob.ar</a>). Interested parties have 42 days to submit their proposals, since the bid opening ceremony is scheduled for January 13, 2025 at 08:00 am.
The Argentine Army (EA) is looking to use the UH-60s for a variety of missions including aerial assault, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, and civil support tasks such as firefighting.
<h3>Requirements established in the bid</h3>
These helicopters must be configured with visual and instrument flight capabilities (VFR/IFR), night vision goggles (NVG) and specialized equipment such as cargo hooks, rappel and fast-rope systems, as well as two 7.62 mm MAG machine gun shafts per aircraft and provision for auxiliary fuel tanks, both internal and external.
The tender specifies that the aircrafts must have been manufactured after 1990 and meet stringent technical standards. The helicopters will be delivered with an operational potential of at least 480 hours, having completed intermediate maintenance inspections (PMI). In addition, they must incorporate the latest technical improvements recommended by the manufacturer.

The material will be delivered to the Aircraft Supply and Maintenance Battalion 601, located in Campo de Mayo, under the terms of international trade Incoterm 2020, DAP condition. This guarantees that the successful bidder will be responsible for transportation and delivery at destination.
<h3>Training and support</h3>
The program also includes initial simulator training courses for pilots and co-pilots, while technical personnel will receive training in preventive and corrective maintenance. The courses will cover key systems such as engines, dynamic components and avionics, and will be conducted in Spanish.
In addition, the contract includes technical support for 36 months, with a representative stationed at Campo de Mayo to assist in the start-up and maintenance of the aircraft.
Finally, the aircraft must be backed by a warranty of 12 months or 960 flight hours, whichever comes first. The supplier must guarantee an initial stock of spare parts for both preventive and corrective maintenance, as well as the necessary logistics to meet critical needs in less than 96 hours.
<h3>Bidder eligibility</h3>
Companies registered in the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program of the United States, with verifiable experience in the maintenance of Sikorsky UH-60 helicopters, may participate. They must also have a workshop in Argentina that complies with the Military Airworthiness Regulations, with at least five years of experience in this type of aircraft.
<h3>A small step on the right path</h3>
Although the incorporation of only three used Black Hawk helicopters is insufficient to meet the urgent need to replace dozens of old UH-1 Huey helicopters, it represents a first, albeit modest, step towards modernization by the Argentine Army. This initiative aims at equipping the force with operational capabilities in accordance with international standards and 21st century warfare requirements.

As more resources are allocated for the modernization of the Argentine Army&#8217;s helicopter fleet, further UH-60 Black Hawk acquisitions are expected. However, a “one-for-one” replacement of the veteran UH-1 Huey seems unlikely. More probable is the prioritization of a dozen or more Black Hawk additions for high-demand missions, such as air assault and combat search and rescue (CSAR). For liaison and logistic support tasks, currently performed by the Huey, it would make sense to look for a more economical alternative.
In this regard, Airbus Helicopters has already <a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/08/helicopteros-dauphin-y-lakota-airbus-propone-renovacion-costo-efectiva-para-la-armada-y-el-ejercito-argentino/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offered its UH-72B Lakota</a>, available through the FMS program, while India is keeping active its proposal for the HAL LUH (Light Utility Helicopter) MK-1 and the Dhruv medium utility helicopter. It should be recalled that in July 2023, the Argentine government signed a <a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2023/07/argentina-signs-letter-of-intent-in-india-for-the-acquisition-of-medium-and-light-helicopters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter of intent</a> with India to explore this option.

Argentine Army launches tender to purchase used Black Hawk helicopters

A TC-12B Huron of the Argentine Navy &#8216;s (ARA) Maritime Surveillance Aeronaval Squadron flew from the Río Grande Naval Air Base to the Petrel Joint Antarctic Base. An ARA aircraft had not landed in Antarctica in more than half a century.
As Gaceta Marinera (a publication of the Argentine Navy) explains, the return to the white continent required extensive annual training and readiness work to operate on unprepared runways and meticulous planning and execution. Thanks to this, the Argentine Navy achieved the goal of returning with fixed-wing aircraft to the Antarctic Continent after 51 years.

In this way, the search and rescue capacity, sanitary evacuations and logistic flights for the support of the Argentine Republic&#8217;s operations on the white continent will be recovered.
<h3>Return to the White Continent</h3>
In the early morning of Wednesday, November 27, the air operation was carried out from the Río Grande Naval Air Base to the Petrel Joint Antarctic Base (BAC), whose runway was recently rehabilitated by the Antarctic crew. After a rigorous meteorological monitoring, at 1 AM a TC-12B Huron from the Maritime Surveillance Air Squadron took off, accompanied by the <a style="color: #ff0000;" href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/09/the-first-p-3c-orion-of-the-argentine-navy-performed-its-first-patrol-flight-and-exercised-with-a-u-s-submarine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently incorporated P-3C Orion</a> from the Exploration Air Squadron, which provided logistical support and verified the weather and runway conditions from the air.
The aircraft arrived at Petrel around 5 AM. While the P-3C monitored the environment, the TC-12B made the scheduled landing, remaining on the apron for two hours for refueling. At 7 AM, the Huron took off on a direct flight back to Rio Grande, successfully completing this key operation for the logistical link with the Antarctic base.
The Argentine Navy has not operated fixed-wing aircraft from runways in Antarctica for more than 51 years. The last operations of this type were carried out at the “Petrel Naval Air Station”, inaugurated on February 22, 1967, whose history dates back to a naval refuge established in 1952. Between 1967 and 1972, the Navy used DHC-2 Beaver, Twin Otter and PC-6 Porter aircraft from that base. However, a 1972 fire severely damaged the facility, limiting the station&#8217;s use to the summer season.
But in 2013 plans were activated to return it to its original role and transform it into a multimodal logistics hub for the Argentine Antarctic Program, taking advantage of its geographical advantages over Marambio Base and improving the distribution of cargo and people to the thirteen Argentine Antarctic bases.

Historic: Argentine Navy plane landed again in Antarctica after 51 years

The Argentine Air Force (FAA) is moving forward with the incorporation of the F-16B MLU Block 10 fighter, a strategic project that involves technicians from the FAA and the Royal Danish Air Force (RFAD) working in Denmark to bring the first Fighting Falcon to Argentina.
Since October 26, 2024, a technical team from the Dirección de Abastecimiento de Material (DAM) of the Dirección General de Material (DGM) of the Argentine Air Force, together with personnel from the F-16M Program, has been at the Defense Maintenance Service (Forsvarets Vedligeholdelses Tjeneste &#8211; FVT), a maintenance unit of the Royal Danish Air Force (RFAD), in Aalborg, Denmark.

According to the FAA, this team&#8217;s mission is to prepare the F-16B MLU Block 10 training aircraft and consolidate the logistic equipment destined for the future &#8216;Instruction and Improvement Center&#8217; at the VI Air Brigade, whose works will start shortly.
The tasks include the identification of the goods to be transported, specified in the contract signed on April 16 between the Argentine Ministry of Defense and the Danish Defense Logistics Acquisition Organization (DALO). Once the cataloguing is completed, the cargo will be packed in containers, and then the necessary documents will be prepared to comply with the import administrative procedures.

Currently, the preparation of the containers, which make up the package of elements that will be destined to the training center, and which will be used for the preparation and training of future technical specialist personnel, has been completed.
After completing the loading, the first document transferring the materials to the Argentine Air Force was signed, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The entire cargo was then transported by truck from Aalborg to the port of Aarhus, where Argentine personnel coordinated its delivery to the shipping company for loading and sea transport to Buenos Aires.
The reason for all this careful monitoring is that the contract signed with the Kingdom of Denmark was classified as “Military Secret” through decree 370/24, requiring the adoption of special security measures regarding the handling of the material involved.

On the other hand, in the next few days the F-16B MLU Block 10 training aircraft will be disassembled and transported in two Hercules KC/C-130H aircraft of the Argentine Air Force to its final destination at the VI Air Brigade. This operation requires the preparation of special equipment to “secure the fuselage of the aircraft” as well as for the transfer of the wings, vertical stabilizer and engine.
When the aircraft arrives at the VI Air Brigade, it will be unloaded and assembled, a joint task between the Royal Danish Air Force (RFAD) and Argentine technicians. This process will require special tools, which will be sent to Argentina in containers transported by sea.
The Argentine Air Force reports that the aircraft is expected to be presented to the authorities in the coming weeks, representing the result of long years of work by the institution to incorporate a new supersonic fighter. The first F-16 fighter will soon be flying the colors of the Argentine Republic in its new home.

France will once again offer Brazil the Dassault Rafale fighter jet, this time as a replacement for the AMX light fighters during the next G20 summit, to be held on November 18 and 19 in Rio de Janeiro. According to Brazilian journalist Claudio Dantas, French President Emmanuel Macron will propose a large armament package for the Brazilian Army, Air Force and Navy in his meeting with the Brazilian president.
Paris will propose the sale of 50 Airbus H145 helicopters, which could represent a significant workload for Helibras, the Brazilian subsidiary of Airbus Helicopters. In addition, 36 Caesar 155 mm self-propelled howitzers, an additional Scorpene submarine and 24 Rafale fighters will be included.

It is worth remembering that before opting for the Gripen as the new fighter aircraft for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), Lula and Sarkozy had agreed on the purchase of the Dassault Rafale. This French aircraft offered clear advantages in terms of payload capacity and range, fundamental aspects for regional power projection and the defense of Brazil&#8217;s vast airspace. However, controversies in the bidding process (which had begun in 2001) led to a further postponement, and finally at the end of 2013, during Dilma Rousseff&#8217;s administration, the Swedish proposal was chosen. The main reasons for the victory of the Gripen E/F were lower maintenance and operating costs, as well as very favorable technology transfer conditions.
<h3>Does the Rafale make any sense as a replacement for Brazil&#8217;s AMX?</h3>
The AMX subsonic light ground attack aircraft is the result of an Italian-Brazilian collaboration, jointly built by the AMX International joint venture. Its first flight took place on May 15, 1984, and the first operational A-1A (the FAB designation for the single-seat variant of the AMX, while the two-seat is called A-1B) was officially inducted in October 1989. Since then, the AMX has played a pivotal role as the Brazilian Air Force&#8217;s primary strike, interdiction and air support asset.
After decades of loyal service, the AMX is approaching the end of its operational career. The Italian Air Force retired its last unit in April this year, and it is now up to the FAB to find a suitable replacement.

It is clear that the F-39 Gripen (Brazilian designation) is capable of performing all the missions currently assigned to the small subsonic fighter. Considering that the FAB plans to acquire more batches to reach around 70 units, the French medium fighter proposal might seem overkill. However, the Rafale&#8217;s long range, powerful offensive capability and extensive survivability capabilities could provide Brazil with new levels of air deterrence, thus complementing the FAB&#8217;s combat strategy with a “High-Low” configuration.
The increasing degradation of the global security situation and the renewal of fighter fleets in several South American countries could lead Brasilia to reinforce the deterrent role of its Air Force, aiming to maintain its regional supremacy. In this context, the Rafale could play a key role.

G20 Summit: France will offer Brazil 24 Rafale fighters to replace the AMX. Is it a good option?

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics has secured a $21.95 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to upgrade F-16C/D aircraft, focusing on the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System (AGCAS). Although the DoD announcement did not specify the recipient, industry reports and previous contracts strongly suggest that the Chilean Air Force (FACh) will be one of the primary beneficiaries of this contract as part of the ongoing modernization of its F-16 fleet.
<a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Contracts/Contract/Article/3932972/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The contract was awarded through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program</a> to provide updates to the AGCAS system, which enhances aircraft safety by preventing Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT) incidents. The work will be conducted at Lockheed Martin’s facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and associated locations, and it is expected to be completed by December 31, 2028. An initial amount of $3.6 million has been obligated to finance the project immediately.
<h2>M6.6 Operational Flight Program: The Technical Upgrade</h2>
The broader context of this contract aligns with Lockheed Martin&#8217;s ongoing efforts to modernize Chile&#8217;s F-16 fleet through the M6.6 Operational Flight Program and Systems Upgrade. This initiative includes the integration of Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponders and Link 16 tactical datalinks, essential for maintaining real-time situational awareness and secure communication in coalition operations.
Although the DoD has not confirmed the final user, there is substantial evidence pointing to Chile. The Chilean Air Force has been carrying out a comprehensive modernization of its 46 F-16s, consisting of 36 second-hand F-16s acquired from the Netherlands and 10 new F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft delivered in the early 2000s. In November 2023, Lockheed Martin was awarded a separate $177 million contract for a similar M6.6 systems upgrade for Chile’s F-16s, further supporting the speculation that Chile is the primary recipient of this contract.
However, it is important to note that only the 10 F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft in Chile&#8217;s fleet would be able to receive these upgrades, as the remaining 36 aircraft are older AM/BM models. These were acquired second-hand from the Netherlands and previously upgraded to the M4 standard, which limits their compatibility with the AGCAS system and other advanced features.
The AGCAS will play a crucial role in improving flight safety, especially considering Chile&#8217;s challenging geographic conditions, with mountainous terrain posing a significant risk to pilots. The integration of AGCAS and other upgrades ensures that Chile’s F-16 fleet remains capable of both combat and non-combat missions.
While the U.S. Department of Defense has not explicitly stated that the contract is for Chile, several reports and previous contracts point to the Chilean Air Force as the most likely beneficiary. This contract is part of a broader trend of air force modernization in Latin America, with Chile’s F-16s set to remain a crucial component of the country’s air defense strategy for the foreseeable future.
The ongoing modernization efforts underscore the importance of maintaining interoperability with NATO allies and ensuring pilot safety through advanced systems like AGCAS. As regional defense challenges evolve, these upgrades provide key strategic and operational advantages to maintain air superiority in South America.

Lockheed Martin Secures F-16 Modernization Contract, With Chile a Likely Beneficiary

The first P-3C Orion aircraft, recently incorporated, is already performing patrol flights over the Argentine maritime littoral.
According to Gaceta Marinera (Argentine Navy publication), on Tuesday afternoon, September 24, the first patrol flight of the recently incorporated P-3C Orion, registration number 6-P-57, belonging to the Air and Naval Exploration Squadron of the Air and Naval Force No. 3, over the Argentine maritime coastline took place.

During its initial maritime surveillance and control missions, and as a demonstration of sovereign presence, the aircraft overflew a concentration of fishing vessels at the 201 nautical mile limit. Additionally, it conducted exercises with the USS «Hampton» (SSN-767), a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine returning from Valparaíso, Chile, after participating in the multinational naval operation UNITAS LXV.
The training with the US Navy submarine took place 320 nautical miles east of Puerto Madryn and consisted of surface detection and identification, appendage identification, radar, FLIR, and MAD detection, and the establishment of a series of operational communications.

This opportunity exercise, called PASSEX, proved to be an excellent chance to test and operate the aircraft&#8217;s equipment, as well as to put into practice the current operating procedures and increase the training and experience of the Argentine Navy&#8217;s personnel.

The first P-3C Orion of the Argentine Navy performed its first patrol flight and exercised with a U.S. submarine.

The Argentine government has announced a significant investment plan to enhance the capabilities of its Air Force and Navy, including <a href="https://aviacionline.com/2024/09/el-gobierno-reasigna-presupuesto-para-los-f-16-de-la-fuerza-aerea-y-los-p-3c-orion-de-la-armada/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acquiring F-16 fighter jets</a>, medium transport aircraft, helicopters, UAVs, and simulators. These expenditures are part of the 2025 budget bill, which the government has submitted to Congress for approval. The total expenditure for these programs amounts to 699.347 billion Argentine pesos, approximately 743.55 million USD.
To support the Incorporation of Equipment and Complementary Capabilities for the F-16 Weapons System, the bill includes a total expenditure of 24.334 billion ARS (approximately 25.87 million USD). This investment will be spread over four years: in 2024, the government plans to spend 5.685 billion ARS (~6.04 million USD); in 2025, 6.448 billion ARS (~6.85 million USD); in 2026, 6.761 billion ARS (~7.19 million USD); and in 2027, 5.440 billion ARS (~5.78 million USD). The F-16s will be based at the VI Air Brigade in Tandil, Buenos Aires Province.
To strengthen its transport capabilities, Argentina plans to invest in the Incorporation of Six Medium-Range Transport Aircraft, aiming to enhance logistical support and operational flexibility. The total expenditure for this program is 17.591 billion ARS (approximately 18.7 million USD), with the following distribution: in 2024, 5.374 billion ARS (~5.71 million USD); in 2025, 5.629 billion ARS (~5.99 million USD); in 2026, 3.524 billion ARS (~3.75 million USD); and in 2027, 3.063 billion ARS (~3.26 million USD). These aircraft will be stationed at the I Air Brigade in El Palomar, Buenos Aires Province.
The government also aims to acquire medium helicopters to enhance the Air Force&#8217;s capacity for personnel and cargo transport, a crucial component for various operations. The total expenditure for this program is 657.422 billion ARS (approximately 699.27 million USD). This expenditure includes 15.211 billion ARS (~16.18 million USD) in 2024, 60 billion ARS (~63.82 million USD) in 2025, 280 billion ARS (~297.72 million USD) in 2026, and 302.211 billion ARS (~321.55 million USD) in 2027.
<h2>Additional Investments</h2>
Additionally, the government plans to incorporate light naval helicopters to enhance the operational capacity of the fleet, with a total expenditure of 137.2 billion ARS (~145.94 million USD). There is also an allocation for the recovery and modernization of the CASA 212 AE-265 aircraft of the Army Aviation, with 2.37 billion ARS (~2.52 million USD). In terms of unmanned capabilities, UAVs will be incorporated with a total budget of 1.583 billion ARS (~1.68 million USD).
To complete the operation, loans amounting to 98 million USD have been authorized for the acquisition of the aforementioned light naval helicopters, which will operate on Argentine Navy surface units.
<h2>Helicopter Recovery and Modernization</h2>
The plan also includes the recovery and upgrading of four (4) Airbus Helicopters H125 for the National Gendarmerie, with a total expenditure of 14.9 billion ARS (~15.84 million USD). This investment includes 2.235 billion ARS (~2.38 million USD) in 2025, 2.235 billion ARS (~2.38 million USD) in 2026, 2.98 billion ARS (~3.17 million USD) in 2027, and the remaining 7.45 billion ARS (~7.92 million USD).
Additionally, there are plans for the modernization of two Airbus Helicopters (Eurocopter) AS365 Dauphin from version N2 to N3+ with a total expenditure of 11.82 billion ARS (~12.57 million USD). This includes 2.955 billion ARS (~3.14 million USD) in 2025, 3.841 billion ARS (~4.08 million USD) in 2026, 3.841 billion ARS (~4.08 million USD) in 2027, and the remaining 1.183 billion ARS (~1.26 million USD).
The budget also mentions the acquisition and enhancement of helicopters to complete the fleet of the Argentine Federal Police, with a total value of 31.3 billion ARS (over 32 million USD).

Argentina plans to invest nearly $750 million in helicopters and airplanes for the Armed and Security Forces in 2025 budget bill

Last Friday (26), the Government of Rio Grande do Sul, through the Department of Environment and Infrastructure (Sema), the Brazilian Army (EB), the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), and partners Arcanimal and the Animal Rescue Group in Disasters (Grad), conducted another task force to send animals rescued in the Rio Grande do Sul flood to Rio de Janeiro (RJ).
According to the State Government, around 35 dogs were transported from the Animal Welfare Center in Canoas for boarding on the KC-390 Millennium. The flight took off around 6 p.m. from the Canoas Air Base, with an expected arrival at 7:30 p.m. at Galeão Air Base.
Five dogs have already left Rio Grande do Sul adopted by new owners, while the others will participate in the «Adopt a Pet Gauchinho» campaign over the weekend (27 and 28/7) in seven shopping centers in Rio de Janeiro. According to the state coordinator of Sema&#8217;s Fauna Response Office, Amanda Munari, the animals are vaccinated, neutered, and identified with microchips, reports our affilated media in Brazil, <a href="https://aeroin.net/mais-de-35-caes-sao-resgatados-e-levados-no-kc-390-da-fab-do-rio-grande-do-sul-ao-rio-de-janeiro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroin</a>.

The group of animals was accompanied by Grad&#8217;s veterinary doctors. «There have already been several trips transporting the dogs, and in all of them, everything went as planned. The most important thing is that they are all being adopted and getting a second chance,» summarized Carla Sássi, a veterinary doctor in the rescue group.
On the last 19th of July, the aircraft had already sent 55 dogs to participate in fairs in Rio de Janeiro. All the animals found new homes through adoption.

Brazilian KC-390 Millennium Transports Flood-Affected Animals for Adoption

After several rumors and unofficial information, the Brazilian Air Force confirmed that it is analyzing the possibility of having used F-16 fighters in its fleet.
The rumors began months ago when a slide from the FAB during a presentation in Congress showed a second fighter aircraft, in addition to the Gripen NG, as part of the force&#8217;s future plans. This information about a secondary combat aircraft had also been mentioned by the Air Force Commander, according to our associated media in Brazil, <a href="https://aeroin.net/forca-aerea-brasileira-confirma-interesse-em-cacas-f-16-usados/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroin</a>.
This week, the renowned magazine Janes reported that the FAB is negotiating a batch of 24 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon (Viper) fighters with the U.S., from stored aircraft, most likely F-16C/D models.
The goal of this purchase is to replace the remaining fleet of F-5 fighters and AMX attack aircraft, as the current batch of Gripen fighters (36 aircraft) will not be sufficient to re-equip all the jet combat squadrons of the Brazilian Air Force.

The FAB was consulted by the portal <a href="https://www.defesaaereanaval.com.br/aviacao/forca-aerea-brasileira-responde-sobre-aquisicao-de-cacas-f-16-usados" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Defensa Aérea y Naval</a>, and confirmed that it is analyzing the purchase of the Viper, but that a formal negotiation has not yet been made, and that this exploration is not related to the current situation of the Gripen or its capabilities.
«The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) reports that it is collecting data to conduct a study on the possibility of acquiring used F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft. The analysis, however, is not related to the capabilities of the F-39 Gripen aircraft,» the force reported.
«It is also noted that, so far, no negotiations are being conducted with governments or companies, nor have quantities or versions been defined. The only interactions carried out on the subject were aimed at data collection,» they concluded.

Brazilian Air Force Confirms Interest in Acquiring Used F-16 Fighters

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has reached 1,000 flight hours with 26 aircraft in missions supporting the victims of the historic floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The operations have included rescuing isolated people, transporting tons of donations from the “Todos Unidos pelo Sul” («All United for the South») campaign , and installing modules for the Field Hospitals of the three Armed Forces, among other actions.
<h3>Operations coordinated by COMAE</h3>
According to the FAB, with specific doctrines and different profiles, but acting in a coordinated manner by the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE), the vectors employed in the context of Operation Taquari 2 have been indispensable in humanitarian aid to Rio Grande do Sul. Since April 30, missions have been carried out from the Air Bases of Santa Maria (BASM), Canoas (BACO), and Florianópolis (BAFL), reports our affiliated media in Brazil, <a href="https://aeroin.net/com-26-aeronaves-empregadas-fab-ultrapassa-1-000-horas-de-voo-em-missoes-de-ajuda-ao-rs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Aeroin</a>.
“The milestone represents the prompt response of the FAB, especially of its Air Units, to meet the needs of society during the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. <h3>Participation of various aircraft</h3>
The C-98 Caravan aircraft are operated by the Second Air Transport Squadron (2º ETA) – Pastor Squadron, the Sixth Air Transport Squadron (6º ETA) – Guará Squadron, and the Santa Maria Air Base (BASM). These aircraft have primarily conducted the logistical transportation of donations and military personnel in several flights per day.
Also participating are the C-97 Brasília aircraft, operated by the Fifth Air Transport Squadron (5º ETA) – Pegasus Squadron and the 6º ETA, as well as the C-95 Bandeirante aircraft, operated by the Third Air Transport Squadron (3º ETA) – Pioneer Squadron and also by the 2º ETA, 5º ETA, and 6º ETA.
The H-60L Black Hawk helicopters are operated by the Second Squadron of the Tenth Aviation Group (2º/10º GAV) – Pelican Squadron and the Fifth Squadron of the Eighth Aviation Group (5°/8° GAV) – Panther Squadron. Other rotary-wing vectors include the H-36 Caracal, operated by the Third Squadron of the Eighth Aviation Group (3°/8° GAV) – Puma Squadron and the First Squadron of the Eighth Aviation Group (1°/8° GAV) – Falcon Squadron.
The C-105 Amazonas aircraft, operated by the First Squadron of the Ninth Aviation Group (1°/9° GAV) – Arara Squadron and the First Squadron of the Fifteenth Aviation Group (1°/15° GAV) – Onça Squadron, have been used for aerial resupply operations such as delivering food, medicines, and other essential items. Additionally, they have been used in other operations such as transporting medical equipment and ICU Air missions.
The KC-390 Millennium vectors, operated by the First Transport Group (1º/1º GT) – Fat Squadron and the First Troop Transport Group (1º GTT) – Zeus Squadron, also perform cargo drops – the so-called aerial resupply, allowing for the transportation of a greater amount of food and medicine in a short time.

The Argentine government<a href="http://aviacionline.com/2024/04/argentina-finalizes-purchase-of-f-16-aircraft-from-denmark/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> signed this Tuesday with Denmark a historic agreement for the purchase of 24 F-16 fighters</a> that will equip the Argentine Air Force and give it the biggest technological leap in decades.
But, what is the purpose of having supersonic combat aviation?
Primarily, to exercise airspace police power, to intercept any aircraft that enters our sovereign space without a defined flight plan and without identification.
This covers all types of aircraft, whether those having some problem with their radio systems, drug flights, enemy aviation, anticipating any neighboring country coming to test our response capabilities, in short, having combat aviation is the «fence and lock» one puts on their home&#8217;s door, it is the safeguard of the airspace, of the national sovereignty.

This also recovers the supersonic capability, which is fundamental for interception, to be quick at a necessary point, to gain altitude quickly (in this sense, the F-16 is an aircraft that has an excellent weight-to-power ratio, giving it great acceleration and climbing capability). Indeed, the F-16 will be the most agile combat aircraft the Argentine Air Force has had, at least since the supersonic era.
The F-16s will also allow obtaining beyond visual range (BVR) combat capability thanks to its modernized APG-66 radar and the incorporation of a medium-range air-to-air missile AIM-120 AMRAAM with 120 km range, as reported by sources close to Aviacionline.
BVR capability is crucial for modern air combat. Lacking this capability made Argentine combat aircraft an easy target, as it was nearly impossible to engage in close combat without being shot down.
The Argentine Air Force will also acquire with the F-16s precision strike capability, being one of the few in the region that did not have it (as is the case with the air forces of Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Venezuela). The acquired F-16s incorporate modern target designation systems, a capability not available today, which are pods located underneath the aircraft&#8217;s fuselage allowing to detect, identify and illuminate ground targets with a laser, as well as visually identify air targets.
These pods come accompanied by «smart» air-to-surface weaponry, being the first time the Argentine Air Force will have guided air-to-surface bombs and missiles (beyond some national design prototypes, which were never mass-produced), because the A-4ARs, although theoretically capable, were never equipped with intelligent weaponry, hence restricted to operating what is called «dumb bombs», leaving the country 40 years behind.
In summary, with the F-16s, the Argentine Air Force reincorporates supersonic interception capability, acquires beyond visual range combat capability, and significantly increases its combat capability, being a fully multirole aircraft capable of performing air-to-air, air-to-surface, reconnaissance, and anti-radar missions.
On this last point, the aircraft will come equipped with anti-radar missiles AGM-88 HARM, a very important capability to suppress enemy air defenses and create safe approach corridors for attack packages.
Having a defense capability reasonably in line with the region (although it could be argued that Argentina would need at least 72 modern combat aircraft, but it&#8217;s something), stabilizes it, being on par with our neighbors.
The F-16s will also represent for the Argentine Air Force the capability to participate in international exercises, such as Salitre or Red Flag, which allows creating bonds, sharing experiences, learning, and forging camaraderie and mutual understanding, all of which is very important in the military world as well as international politics.
These are the aircraft Ukraine is requesting (and <a href="http://aviacionline.com/2024/02/dinamarca-entregara-los-primeros-f-16-a-ucrania-en-pocos-meses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will receive</a>) to rebuild its air force to Western and NATO standards. Obviously, they are not capable of turning the war around by themselves, but it is understood that they have the capacity to inflict much more damage, make things more difficult for Russia, not leaving the Ukrainian airspace so unguarded.

Yes, the F-16s are aged, not the latest «fashion scream» in aerospace technology. The most advanced aircraft in South America are the Brazilian F-39 Gripens of Swedish origin, but they are technology that, when properly used, remains useful, relevant, and dangerous, with damage capability.
Thus, Argentina goes from being almost entirely unarmed to having at least a shield, something that protects and guards its borders.
Then it will be time to move forward in incorporating a greater number of more modern aircraft, because the F-16s are fourth generation, when many countries are already incorporating fifth-generation aircraft and others are already working on the sixth.
Yes, we remain behind in relation to our neighbors, our greatest hypothesis of conflict, and in terms of the needs for protecting our vast borders and resources, but we were so poor in «modern» defensive capabilities that it cannot be denied that the incorporation of the F-16s for the Argentine Air Force represents a very important qualitative leap.
