JetBlue began nonstop service between New York-JFK and Bonaire with two weekly flights, with the only nonstop connection being between <a href="https://www.jfkairport.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">John F. Kennedy Airport</a> and Flamingo International Airport. With this new route, JetBlue now offers flights to all three ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao in the Dutch Caribbean, as well as St. Maarten, consolidating its Caribbean network.

As the situation in Lebanon deteriorates due to the advance of Israel&#8217;s ground offensive on southern parts of the country and the intensification of bombardments against Hezbollah targets, several countries intensified their efforts to evacuate their citizens.
Many embassies are using their social networks to communicate evacuation guidance and warnings to their respective citizens, which is mainly carried out by air, taking advantage of the fact that Beirut&#8217;s Rafic Hariri International Airport is still operational.

On September 28, 2024, a Boeing 737 of the Colombian Air Force (FAC) was deployed from the Military Air Transport Command (CATAM) in Bogota. The objective of this mission is to return 114 Colombians to Colombia, as well as to transport humanitarian aid to Beirut. The FAC also put on alert a Boeing 767 as an alternative aircraft.

The Spanish Air and Space Force deployed an A400M and an A330 to manage the return of at least 350 people wishing to travel back to Spain. The first repatriation flight has already landed in Torrejón.

The Argentine embassy in Lebanon advises its citizens to try to leave the country by their own means, as long as the Beirut international airport is operational.
<h4>EE.UU.</h4>
As of September 28, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut declared Security Alert Level 4, and asked its approximately 86,000 citizens to leave Lebanon on commercial flights. There is no information yet on an eventual evacuation by USAF military aircrafts, but it is known that it has military forces deployed in Cyprus preparing for such a scenario.
<h4>Australia</h4>
Canberra urges its citizens in Lebanon to return immediately. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “We reiterate the call for Australians in Lebanon to return home. These are volatile circumstances and we want to make sure they are safe.” In addition, the Australian government is providing financial assistance to some of its nationals, estimating that around 15,000 Australians currently reside in Lebanon.
<h4>United Kingdom</h4>
Foreign Secretary David Lammy advising Britons to leave the country. Lammy announced that the government will arrange charter flights from Beirut airport, although citizens will have to pay a fee of 350 pounds (approximately $465) per seat. It is estimated that between 4,000 and 6,000 British nationals are in Lebanon.
<h4>France</h4>
Paris began planning for the evacuation of its approximately 20,000 French citizens from Lebanon. A French army spokesman confirmed the deployment of a helicopter carrier to the eastern Mediterranean for possible evacuations, following Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot&#8217;s recent meeting with the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon.
<h4>Canada</h4>
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said the security situation is becoming “increasingly dangerous and volatile.” Canada has secured an additional 800 seats on commercial flights in the coming days to facilitate the departure of its citizens, estimated at between 40,000 and 75,000 in Lebanon.
<h4>Germany</h4>
The evacuation process of its non-essential personnel and citizens at medical risk has begun. The Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense stated that they will provide assistance to the approximately 1,800 German citizens registered in Lebanon, with a first evacuation flight having already taken place.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stressed the complexity of the situation and advised Italians to return as soon as possible. It is estimated that there are around 300 Italians in Lebanon for work purposes and 3,000 with dual nationality.
<h4>Bulgaria</h4>
The country managed to evacuate 89 citizens, mainly families with children, and is organizing additional flights to continue the operation. So far, 160 Bulgarians have requested to be evacuated.
<h4>Japan</h4>
The Japanese government is urging its citizens to leave on commercial flights and is preparing military aircrafts in case they are needed for evacuation. Approximately 50 Japanese are currently residing in Lebanon.
<h4>Philippines</h4>
Plans to evacuate 11,000 of its citizens are underway, with thousands of people to be transferred by sea.
<h4>Portugal</h4>
Lisbon was already able to evacuate 44 people on a military flight via Cyprus, and Turkey. There are approximately 14,000 registered citizens in Lebanon to be evacuated.
<h4>Russia</h4>
It has already started the evacuation of its citizens and a special flight with family members of Russian diplomats left Beirut. About 3,000 Russian and CIS citizens wish to leave the country.
<h4>Poland</h4>
It will limit staffing at its embassy in Beirut and arrange transportation for citizens wishing to leave Lebanon.
<h4>Netherlands</h4>
A military aircraft will be sent to repatriate its nationals in two flights scheduled for October 4 and 5.

The humanitarian crisis in southern Lebanon is worsening by the day, with nearly one million people displaced due to clashes between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah. While the situation does not reach the levels of traumatizing chaos we saw in the 2021 evacuation of Kabul, escalating tensions and Iranian missile attacks threaten to destabilize the entire Middle East region.

Israel-Hezbollah conflict: several countries begin evacuating their citizens from Lebanon

La Asociación de Transporte Aéreo Internacional (IATA) pidió medidas urgentes para profundizar el conocimiento sobre la formación y el impacto climático de las estelas de la aviación para desarrollar medidas de mitigación efectivas.
El informe recientemente publicado de la IATA “Las estelas de vapor de la aviación y su efecto climático”, sostiene que abordar las incertidumbres y habilitar soluciones exige un fortalecimiento de la colaboración entre la investigación y la innovación tecnológica, junto con marcos de políticas para abordar las emisiones distintas de CO2 de la aviación a través de más datos atmosféricos.
El informe destaca la complejidad de la ciencia de las estelas de vapor, señalando lagunas en la comprensión de cómo se forman las estelas de vapor, cuándo podrían persistir y cómo impactan el clima. La falta de datos de alta resolución y en tiempo real sobre las condiciones atmosféricas (particularmente la humedad y la temperatura en altitudes de crucero) dificulta el pronóstico preciso de las estelas.
“La industria y sus partes interesadas están trabajando para abordar el impacto de las emisiones distintas del CO2 en el cambio climático, en particular las estelas de vapor. Para garantizar que este esfuerzo sea efectivo y sin efectos adversos, debemos comprender mejor cómo y dónde se forman las estelas de vapor y reducir las incertidumbres relacionadas con su impacto climático”, dijo Willie Walsh, Director General de la IATA.
“Actuar ahora” significa más ensayos, recopilación de más datos, mejora de los modelos climáticos y tecnologías y operaciones maduras. Formular e implementar regulaciones basadas en datos insuficientes y una comprensión científica limitada es una tontería y podría generar impactos adversos en el clima. <h3>Recomendaciones</h3>
Con los niveles actuales de comprensión, el informe hizo las siguientes recomendaciones:

<li>En el plazo inmediato (2024-2030), la prioridad para mitigar el impacto del cambio climático de la aviación debería ser reducir las emisiones de CO2 por encima de las ganancias inciertas que podrían derivarse de la detección de estelas de vapor y su mitigación. Durante este tiempo, el trabajo sobre la mitigación de las estelas de vapor debería centrarse en aumentar la participación de las aerolíneas en programas de sensores, continuar la investigación científica y mejorar los modelos climáticos y de humedad.</li>
<li>Las acciones a mediano plazo (2030-2040) deberían implicar el establecimiento de estándares para la transmisión de datos, la validación continua de modelos y alentar a los fabricantes de aeronaves a incluir disposiciones para observaciones meteorológicas, así como medidas de evitación seleccionadas.</li>
<li>Acciones a más largo plazo (2040-2050): Las aeronaves deberían proporcionar datos continuamente y los modelos y la infraestructura deberían estar ahí y ser fiables. En este punto, la comunidad tendrá una comprensión más completa de los efectos de los combustibles alternativos distintos del CO2, con medidas de mitigación ampliadas. <h3>Antecedentes de las emisiones distintas de CO2 de la aviación</h3>
El impacto de la aviación en el clima se extiende más allá de las emisiones de CO2; los efectos no relacionados con el CO2, como las estelas de vapor y los óxidos de nitrógeno (NOx), también contribuyen al calentamiento global. Las estelas de vapor persistentes, formadas en regiones sobresaturadas de hielo, pueden transformarse en cirros que reflejan la radiación solar entrante (durante el día) y atrapan el calor saliente.
En definitiva, se entiende que las estelas de vapor tienen un efecto de calentamiento sobre el clima, con variaciones diurnas, estacionales y geográficas. Sin embargo, a pesar de estudios exhaustivos, existen importantes incertidumbres con respecto a la capacidad de predecir la formación de estelas individuales y su impacto climático específico.
Iniciativas y ensayos: colaboraciones recientes entre meteorólogos, investigadores climáticos, aerolíneas y fabricantes de aviones han generado nuevos conocimientos que subrayan la necesidad de mejorar la recopilación de datos y los análisis de las posibles complicaciones de la red de tráfico aéreo con respecto a cualquier solución. Los ensayos con rutas de vuelo modificadas y combustibles alternativos han demostrado una eficacia potencial aunque limitada debido a la variabilidad de las condiciones atmosféricas y la naturaleza localizada del lugar donde se producen las estelas de vapor.

Historic Emirates Airbus A380 A6-EDA Finds New Life in Upcycled Collection

Days after China announced the <a href="http://aviacionline.com/2022/12/after-three-years-china-reopens-its-borders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">easing of health requirements for travel to and from the country as of 8 January</a>, several countries reported that they will impose new conditions on passengers arriving from the Asian country.
The new measures take place in a context of global alarm over the situation in China, which in recent days has seen a considerable increase in cases of COVID-19. Despite this, Beijing suddenly lifted restrictions on international travel after maintaining one of the world&#8217;s most restrictive policies to deal with the pandemic.
As of 8 January, China will no longer require quarantine for arrivals to the country. In addition, the national administration said it will reopen passport applications for its citizens. The announcement led to increased demand for flights and prompted many countries to revise their entry requirements.
In this context, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan were the first countries to confirm that they would tighten conditions. In Milan, for example, it was reported that up to half of the passengers on flights from China tested positive. As a result, Italian health authorities will start testing for the virus.
Yesterday, the United States became the latest country to impose stricter entry requirements.
<h4>United States to require a negative test</h4>
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States national public health agency, announced that passengers arriving in the country from the People&#8217;s Republic of China and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, or who have been there up to ten days prior to their travel, will be required to present a negative PCR or antigen test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
In an official statement, the agency explained that the measure is aimed at «slowing the spread of COVID-19 in the United States» during the surge of cases in China, «given the lack of adequate and transparent epidemiological and viral genomic sequence data being reported».
As of 5 January, all persons two years of age and older arriving on flights from China will be required to hold a negative test performed within 48 hours prior to travel.
It will be a precondition for boarding to present the result of the test to the airline staff in charge of the check-in process at the airport of departure. The requirement shall apply to all air passengers, irrespective of their nationality and vaccination status.
Test will also be required for persons travelling from China who are in transit to third countries via the United States, as well as for passengers travelling from China through Seoul-Incheon International Airport (ICN), Toronto-Pearson International Airport (YYZ) or Vancouver International Airport (YVR) up to two days prior to entry into the country.

Recent discovery of a plot to enter prohibited goods into Kuwait’s main prison has confirmed an alarming trend that is growing worldwide: with easier access to heavier and more capable drones, the possibilities for them to be used for crime are on the rise.
According to Al Jarida, last Friday authorities foiled an attempt by three drones to sneak into Sulaibiya complex. The remote piloted aircraft entered the Central Jail premises and attempted to land in the prison premises but were discovered by security personnel.
A drone was captured, while other two were able to fly away at high speed, one towards Sulaybiya area and the other bound to Al-Raqi area. The General Directorate of Criminal Investigation has been notified of the incident to track the fleeing drones while the seized drone was handed over to the Criminal Evidence Department to identify persons behind the attempt.
Authorities in the Central Prison have opened a large-scale investigation to identify persons who had planned to receive the drones.
<h3>A global problem</h3>
This last attempt is just one sample of a concerning and escalating procedure: according to the US Department of Justice, «Drone delivery of contraband is an increasingly vexing problem for the Federal Bureau of Prisons and state corrections officials.»
Last July, a 44-year-old Houston man was charged in the Eastern District of Texas for allegedly operating a drone over FCI Beaumont in east Texas.
In April 2022, a 30-year-old former inmate pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle phones and tobacco into FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey. And in August 2021, three Atlanta men were sentenced to a year each in federal prison for using drones to smuggle contraband into Telfair State Prison in Georgia.
No country or area is safe: Canadian authorities have stated that Donnacona Institution, one of its maximum-security facilities and located just forty-five kilometers outside Quebec, receives an average of three drone deliveries per week.
Panama&#8217;s La Joya and La Joyita complexes face a similar issue with drugs, guns and cell phones being delivered incessantly to inmates, sometimes with guard complicity.
<h3>Fighting technology with technology: Drone disruption systems come to play</h3>
Ireland&#8217;s battle to regain prison air superiority is on: according to <a href="https://dronedj.com/2022/09/23/irish-prisons-drone-delivery/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dronedj</a> report, six Irish prisons have installed jamming/suppression systems to avoid drone overflights.
IAI&#8217;s ELI-4030 Drone Guard system is a proven tool that can identify, intercept, and disrupt communications between the operator and the aircraft, but the deployment is both complex and expensive. The solution -and others that are similar- offers softkill and hardkill interception both in fully autonomous mode, but the need of qualified personnel for installation and configuration will take a good amount of time and budget.
At the time being, there are few options outside an electronic dome around prisons for the drone delivery campaigns to fail: that would force criminals to find alternate ways for contraband to enter, either pushing innovation or getting back to basics.

Ranked among the best-known VIP aircraft in Europe, the British jet BAe-146-100 (registration G-OFOM), owned by F1 Management and used by the organizers throughout the old continent, made its last flight for the motorsport group on Friday, September 16.
After taking off from Milan with twenty members of the participating stewards from last week&#8217;s Monza GP, the aircraft flew to London (Biggin Hill) and then on to Cranfield, also in the UK, where it is to be preserved. It has some peculiarities, such as the presence of an aerodynamic opening brake located in the tail cone in the absence of the engines&#8217; thrust reversing devices.
Over the past 22 years, the F1 Management fleet has had three aircraft of this model (in different periods), which have transported thousands of employees to events all over Europe.

Addio, Jumbolino: After Monza, Formula 1 retires its last BAe 146-100

Hong Kong based airline Cathay Pacific is considering diverting its regular route between New York (JFK) and Hong Kong (HKG) due to restrictions on flying over Russian airspace. If implemented, it would become the longest-haul scheduled commercial flight.
Cathay Pacific plans to fly over the North Atlantic and enter European airspace over the island of Great Britain. The route would then continue over Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The route would thus avoid the usual overflying of Greenland, the Arctic Ocean, Russia and Mongolia. Many Asian airlines already avoid Russian airspace on their routes to Europe and North America.
The Airbus A350-1000, the largest and longest-range aircraft in the family, is capable of operating this route. Cathay Pacific currently operates fifteen of these airplanes.
A company&#8217;s spokewoman said: «We are always running contingency routings for potential events or scenarios». «The Transatlantic option relies on the facilitation of strong seasonal tailwinds at this time of the year in order for the flight time to be between 16 and 17 hours, thereby making it more favorable than the Transpacific route», she added.
The last flight between the two cities made a stopover in Los Angeles and continued over the Pacific. However, the new route would eliminate the need for the stopover and make it more cost-effective and competitive. It is also an important frequency in Cathay Pacific&#8217;s network, which operated three daily flights in both directions prior to the restrictions.
If completed, it would surpass Singapore Airlines&#8217; Singapore-New York flight and become the longest scheduled commercial flight in the world. It would cover a distance of 16,618 kilometres and take between 16 and 17 hours. The company is already arranging the necessary flight permits.

Ukraine: Russia shells Antonov factory housing second and never-completed An-225

The 36 States that make up the <a href="https://www.icao.int/Pages/default.aspx">ICAO</a> Council today discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine during a scheduled meeting of the 225th Session of the ICAO Administrative Council.
A representative of Ukraine also participated in the Council meeting by virtue of that State&#8217;s interest in the situation.
The Council considered the item on the basis of an oral statement made by Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano. Together with a presentation by ICAO Secretary General Juan Carlos Salazar, which updated representatives on the aviation operational context.
Council States condemned the violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a United Nations Member State, including its airspace, as incompatible with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and Article 1 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).
The Council has also expressed its grave concern over the latest developments in Ukraine and its solidarity with its people. This is in direct line with the sentiments expressed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in his statements to the United Nations General Assembly on 23 and 24 February 2022.
<h6>Representatives of States have also recalled the preamble of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention)</h6>
This one notes the need to avoid friction and instead promote cooperation and friendship among nations and peoples, on which the peace of the world depends.
The Council further underlined the paramount importance of preserving the safety and security of international civil aviation. Hence the related obligations of Member States. In this context, the council urged the Russian Federation to cease its unlawful activities to ensure the safety and security of civil aviation in all affected areas. It urged to respect its obligations under the Chicago Convention. The statement also urged to respect other relevant international air law treaties. It called on all parties involved to seek to resolve the crisis through peaceful dialogue and diplomatic channels.
The Council also recalled with deep sorrow the human suffering caused by the downing of flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014. Such a tragedy must never be repeated.
In the same context, the Council reconfirmed its support for the Canadian-led «Safer Skies» initiative. This one enhances international efforts to safeguard civilian flight operations over or near conflict zones.
The Council asked the Secretariat to continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine and to provide support to the States involved.
