Colombia: Avianca mobilizes humanitarian aid and professionals to Catatumbo
An offensive by the ELN guerrilla against a dissident FARC group left at least 60 dead and nearly 40,000 displaced, including around 3,000 people who fled to Venezuela.
In response to the humanitarian crisis affecting Catatumbo, Avianca, through the LifeMiles Mile Bank and its Deprisa transport service, has mobilized resources and essential professionals to provide assistance to affected communities.
Over the past week, an ELN guerrilla offensive against a dissident FARC group left at least 60 dead and nearly 40,000 displaced, including around 3,000 people who fled to Venezuela.
These actions are the result of partnerships with organizations such as Alas para la Gente, Action Against Hunger, Ruta Animal, the National Association of Entrepreneurs of Colombia (ANDI), and the Colombian Food Bank (ABACO).
• On January 23, Avianca transported 14 psychologists to Cúcuta as part of a collaboration with Alas para la Gente to provide psychosocial care to people displaced by violence in the region.
• On January 27, in partnership with Action Against Hunger, four specialized professionals in water, basic sanitation, gender, and protection will be transported. Their work will include the distribution of food, hygiene kits, and water filters, as well as providing psychosocial support.
Transport of food and supplies through Deprisa
• In collaboration with ABACO, 1.4 tons of food will be mobilized to support displaced and vulnerable families.
• With the support of Ruta Animal and LAIKA, Deprisa will transport 2.4 tons of food and pet supplies, including medications, litter, and essential kits for people displaced with their animals.
Internal donation campaign
Additionally, Avianca, together with ANDI and ABACO, has launched an internal campaign to engage its employees in humanitarian aid. This initiative includes the collection of non-perishable food, hygiene items, and monetary donations through collection points established in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cúcuta.
“The crisis in Catatumbo touches all Colombians and all companies in our country. From Avianca, Deprisa, and LifeMiles, we extend the wings of all our planes and the capacity of our human team to support those who need it most in the North of Santander,” stated Felipe Andrés Gómez Vivas, Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Avianca.
Key results so far
• Transportation of 18 healthcare and related professionals.
• Shipment of 3.8 tons of food for communities and pets.
• Active participation of employees and partners in creating a "humanitarian corridor" aimed at quickly responding to the needs of affected communities.
