El Dorado International Airport, in collaboration with Migración Colombia, continues innovating in migration processes with the Biomig tool, a system that reduces wait times by allowing travelers to clear migration controls in less than 30 seconds.
Biomig uses biometric technology, based on iris recognition, to authenticate users’ identities. This system, available at Bogotá’s El Dorado Airport, is completely free and voluntary. Travelers over the age of 12 can register in less than 30 seconds, while minors must be accompanied by their parents or a legal representative.
The system not only enhances passenger experience but also reinforces security in migration processes. Once registered, users can validate their identity at migration checkpoints by placing their passport on a reader and looking into the biometric camera. For foreign nationals, the process includes facial recognition technology.
Since its implementation, Biomig has shown highly positive results. During a recent incentive campaign held between July 8 and August 31, 2024, more than 1,500 travelers enrolled in the system at airports in Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena.
Martha Hernández, Deputy Director of Migration Control at Migración Colombia, emphasized that «the partnership with the private sector has positively impacted the service provided to international travelers.» In 2024, 4,239,337 migration movements were recorded, surpassing the 3,721,257 in 2023, reflecting greater efficiency in the processes.
How to register for Biomig
The registration process is simple and can be completed at designated points in El Dorado Airport:
- Head to counter #68 on the second level of the public area or to the immigration area before entering the migration zone.
- Present your valid passport to the migration officer.
- Register your iris in the biometric camera.
Once registered, when traveling:
- Have your passport and flight number ready.
- Select the appropriate option: Colombian or foreign national.
- Place your passport on the reader for validation.
- Confirm your flight details.
- If you are Colombian, look into the camera for iris recognition; if you are a foreign national, use the facial recognition camera.
A model for the region
Biomig is an example of how public-private collaboration can optimize processes and improve traveler experience. Since its first incentive campaign in 2023, which achieved more than 5,600 enrollments, this system has established itself as a key tool for managing the growing flow of passengers at Colombian airports.
With advanced technology and strategies focused on travelers’ comfort and security, Colombia positions itself as a leader in implementing technological solutions for efficient migration processes.
