Curitiba Airport Growth: $34M Project to Build Long-Haul Runway by 2026
The Government of Paraná reaffirmed it’s support for the construction of a new runway at Afonso Pena International Airport, located in São José dos Pinhais, in the metropolitan area of Curitiba. During a public hearing held on November 21, 2024, at the São José dos Pinhais City Council, the state government detailed the complementary works it will carry out, with an investment of R$ 200 million (~ USD 34 million). These works include the construction of roundabouts, road adjustments, and signage.
The new runway, which will be the longest in Paraná at 3,000 meters in length (surpassing the current 2,100-meter runway), is included in the concession contract for the South Block with the company CCR, which is responsible for the airport’s administration. The works are expected to be completed by December 31, 2026, according to our Brazilian partner outlet, AEROIN.
This expansion, the government noted, will enable the airport to operate direct long-haul flights to destinations in the United States and Europe, boosting tourism, business, and cargo sectors. It will also facilitate simultaneous operations and provide redundancy in airport infrastructure.
The Secretary of State for Planning, Guto Silva, mentioned that this expansion is part of a strategic plan by the state government aimed at strengthening local tourism and business activities, complemented by projects such as the new convention center in Curitiba.
In 2023, Curitiba Airport handled 5.65 million passengers, a figure 14% higher than the previous year, ranking it 12th among the busiest airports in Brazil.
