KLM introduces light blue radome for Boeing 787 fleet
KLM introduces a refreshed livery for its Boeing 787 fleet, featuring a repositioned iconic smile and a fully light blue radome. This update, already seen on its Airbus A321neos, combines modern aesthetics with functional improvements, highlighting KLM’s ongoing innovation in aircraft design
KLM continues its evolution in aircraft livery by adopting a new color scheme for its Boeing 787 fleet, following the trend already established with the new Airbus A321neos.
The most notable change is the repositioning of the airline's iconic "smile" design to the rear. This shift allows the radome—the nose cone that covers the aircraft's radar—to be fully painted in light blue.
Previously, this area featured three colors: light blue, dark blue, and white. This trademark design of KLM, as reported by the associated outlet Aeroin, has now been updated to create a cleaner, modern look.
This adjustment is not only aesthetic but also provides practical advantages. The new radome configuration facilitates the replacement process, a task frequently required due to damage caused by hail, lightning strikes, or bird impacts.
The radome plays a crucial role not only in the aerodynamics of the aircraft but also in protecting radar equipment and antennas in the forward section.
According to Luchtvaartnieuws, the Boeing 787-9 registered as PH-BHF returned from Amarillo, Texas, last weekend, where it underwent this painting and adjustment process. The new, deeper smile is expected to become a defining feature of KLM’s future operations. Similarly, another aircraft, PH-BHE, has also been sent to Texas to receive the same update.
