Lufthansa Technik, one of the leading providers of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for aircraft, announced a strategic alliance with Microsoft to implement solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to optimize maintenance processes and create new operational opportunities by leveraging advanced technologies such as large language models (Large Language Models, LLM).

An LLM is an artificial intelligence model capable of processing and understanding large amounts of data, including unstructured texts like work instructions, images, and graphics. This enables the analysis of complex information, the generation of accurate responses, and the autonomous performance of tasks.

“We are excited about our collaboration with Microsoft,” said Dr. William Willms, Chief Financial Officer of Lufthansa Technik and responsible for the company’s IT division. “This partnership will allow us to harness the potential of AI to solve highly complex challenges, enhance our operations, and deliver exceptional value to our customers.”

The collaboration includes more than 50 use cases based on Microsoft Azure AI Services and the Microsoft Azure cloud. One of the most notable projects is the optimization of technical stop planning, aiming to reduce aircraft ground time by 5% to 10%, which would result in significant operational savings.

Florian Deter, Managing Director of Microsoft Germany, emphasized: “AI is the key technology of our era. Not only does it enable unimaginable advances, but we also prioritize security and data protection for both Lufthansa Technik and our customers.”

This alliance is part of “Digitize the Core,” a strategic initiative by Lufthansa Technik to digitize the company’s core processes. By integrating advanced AI models and a memory-enabled cognitive architecture, the company seeks to transform its operations, access hidden knowledge within unstructured data, and connect it with other information sources.
